Fans Criticize Dead or Alive 5 Boobage

"We want bigger breasts," they chant in unison.

"If there wasn't a need for it, people wouldn't have responded to the alpha demo like they did, and send us feedback." Here, Director Yohei Shimbori isn't referring to criticsm of the game mechanics in Dead or Alive 5; according to Shimbori, the breast size just isn't up to fan standard.

"We were getting feedback from the overseas offices to tone down the sexuality -- to tone down the sexiness of the game, and of the characters," he said. Fans quickly spotted the most important ingredient in a fighting game had been mildly toned down, however:

"We actually got a lot of feedback from people who were playing it, saying, 'We want bigger breasts. Make the characters more like that.' That was kind of surprising," Shimbori told Gamasutra.

Earlier, head of development at Team Ninja Yoskuke Hiyashi went all classy on us after referring to the use of the anatomically impossible female as "common sense" in Japan: "In DoA 5 especially, we're trying to focus on the real women that surround us: the voice of a female, the mannerisms. We are being realistic about it."

Regarding the invaluable feedback, Shimbori added: "There's definitely still room for having sexualized aspects. If you have a solid fighting game system there, there's nothing wrong with having beautiful characters as a layer on top of that -- that's another layer of entertainment that there's a need for."

This is a sad, but predictable, day in gaming. Although, not really, because I don't think anyone ever played DoA for the complex fighting system.

I actually like playing the DoA games for its non-complicated fighting system. I always saw the fan service as a silly element that seemed more like a running gag.

But this... this is actually an absurd thing to complain about. There's more to the games than just giant, jiggly body parts. If they want that, there's always those weird Xtreme games to play...

What I don't understand is the attraction to cartoonishly large tits. Puts me in the minority of men out there, and perhaps this makes me sounds creepy, but I appreciate the smaller breasts out there!

But it's equally shallow on my part to say I'd like to see smaller breasts on a character, isn't it? So I wont judge anyone for wanting a prettier character, even if it's based on whatever horrible tastes they have. Should be the artist's call, really. And I really respect TN as probably the best 3d modelers and animators in the fighting game industry.

I actually picked up DoA5 today and the fighting system has actually fixed of all the problems the series was criticized of before, and it can be quite complex should you choose to explore it. The game is just stupidly sexy in motion, and it would be considerably worse if the characters weren't equally so.

Women come in ALL shapes and sizes. Some even have "cartoonishly large tits" because they were born that way! Equal representation for women is important, yes.

The problem is more than just the size, though. Clearly.

I remember an incident a month or so ago in a live stream where the caster was playing a game with a female character that had an unusual chest shape for a video game character. A person in chat stated that something like that would never exist in real life, which I thought was hilarious, so I replied by saying that she looked pretty normal to me. I was then declared as having never seen a woman's chest in my life. I wanted to facepalm so hard. I guess said person was accustomed to focusing on one type of woman x_X.

@armanda: I suppose I was referring to the physics and not just the size. Or, "cartoonish" as in tits don't roll like the ocean every time a step is taken, lol.
