Some people celebrate their 25th birthday by running for Senate. Pac-Man, however, turns 25 later this year and will be starring in Pac-Man World 3 to mark the occasion.
Created back in 1980 by Toru Iwatani’s after the developer looked at what remained of the pizza he was eating, Pac-Man has remained a part of worldwide culture ever since. His games have been enjoyed by generations of gamers, and once in a great while they're even released on Namco Museum collections.
"Like all of us, Pac-Man has evolved over the years, changing with the times," Toru Iwatani said. “People love Pac-Man because he’s simple and cute and most important FUN.”
Though gamers have not received recent Pac-Man titles as enthusiastically as they once did, Pac-Man World games have just the same gone on to sell lots of units. Because of this, Namco Vice President Garry Cole even had a comment.
"Pac-Man helped launch video games into the mainstream, and as he turns 25 this year, we are happy to see that he continues to have an enduring appeal," he said. "We’re delighted that today’s generation is still able to experience the magic of Pac-Man with Pac-Man World 3."
The game itself will be arriving this Fall, and stars Pac-Man as he once again battles against evil. This time, an evil genius has created a link between the real world and the world Pac-Man inhabits, one that threatens to tear the world apart unless Pac-Man can swoop in and save the day... with a little help from his former enemies.
