News > Q&A: NIS America talks about Holy Invasion of Privacy, Badman! What Did I Do to Deserve This?
When we heard that NIS America was localizing
Yuusha no Kuse ni Namaikida. for an American audience, we were intrigued. You might even say that we were thrilled and we wouldn't deny it even if you said it in very public places.
Because we were so pleased with the announcement, we decided to see what else NIS America was willing to tell us about it. Nao Zook, PR person extraordinaire, was kind enough to respond to our questions (assembled by the nefarious zigfried) with some actual answers. We hope that you enjoy the results!
First off, who is Badman?
Badman is the overlord who rules and controls the underground empire. Well, we're not really sure if he "rules" the underground empire. After all, he's so helpless that he needs your assistance to protect his world from all those heroes. So uh, correction -- Badman is a powerless, self-indulgent, loser who wanders around in the dirt.
What qualities attracted NIS America to this game?
We love quirky, unusual, and "different" games, as you already know. "Badman" has all these elements that NISA looks for in its games. And we just fell in love with this game. Overlord Badman is nothing like the usual "boss character" you meet in other games. And it's just such an NISA kind of game. Plus, the gameplay is dangerously addictive, so you can spend hours upon hours playing this simple, yet deep, game.
How does a title like "Holy Invasion of Privacy, Badman! What Did I Do to Deserve This?" come about? I'm imagining a bunch of people sitting around a table making bad puns and then realizing their own genius. Or perhaps a company contest?
Hahaha! Well I gotta say, you really hit the bulls-eye with that first guess. That's exactly how we came up with the title. We knew we wanted to keep the comically long title of the original Japanese, but involve American pop culture somehow. Knowing what we wanted, we were just throwing out all these movie references, game references, things like that. And our brilliant editors mumbled the "Holy..." line, and instantly we knew we had it. We played with the wording, and finally settled on the title. We were very excited about this name, and when Sony registered the title there was definitely a big positive reaction. People were wondering what kind of game it was, and they seemed to love the name. We definitely got a big kick out of it :-)
We're really looking forward to hooking our PSP up to the HDTV and playing Badman in high-definition, progressive scan glory. Could you tell us a bit about the audiovisual experience we should expect?
As you might have noticed, Badman is a complete throwback to titles from the early era of video games. The bright, smooth sprites really pop and pull you into the underground world. And to go along with that, the music and sound effects will make you feel like you've stepped back into one of those dark, buzzing arcades that you just can't find anymore. So we hope you can enjoy a little journey back into the glory days of gaming!
Rumor has it that the Japanese version was packed full of references to pop culture, in particular RPG culture. How difficult was it to convert that content to a form that would appeal to North Americans' experiences?
Yes, the Japanese version of Badman has tons of references to Japanese pop culture. I must say, our translator and script writer had lots of fun localizing this game. It was definitely a challenge for them, but they really handled it well. They had fun adding American references to the game, and actually our script writer is VERY knowledgeable about comic books, TV shows, and movies, so he enjoyed exploring and utilizing his knowledge fully. But another challenging part of the localization was all the references and jokes that the Japanese Badman made. Our translator often had to explain why it would be funny to Japanese people, then our editor had to come up with something similar in English. This game was certainly more challenging than what we thought initially. But at the same time, we really enjoyed localizing this game for NA audiences and we hope you will enjoy the game!
Is it true that the in-jokes are an insidious scheme to lampoon all of your competitors, thereby placing NIS America on the throne of RPG supremacy?
Hahaha. Don't tell anybody! (j/k)
Are there any plans to localize the PlayStation Network download scenarios?
Hmmm, if you are talking about the demo version of Holy Invasion of Privacy, Badman! We are working on the demo DLC for PSN, and it should be available soon. We will definitely let you know when it's out!
Tell us a bit about the legendary hero in blue. His armor is sexy. What's his story?
"Sexy" is the only thing he is going for. And I'm pretty sure he is happy that you get that feel from his appearance. His name is Shota, and he only seems to attract only older men...and other than Badman, that's his biggest concern right now. But that's what he gets for wearing sexy blue armor, right?
Emotional, heartfelt testimonials touch our readers' souls. Could you describe one of your personal favorite experiences from the game?
Oh, I love "Holy Invasion of Privacy, Badman!" You might be thinking, "Well of course she loves the game. She does PR for the company!" But even if I didn't work for NISA, I would've still gladly said I love the game! From Badman's silly comments, to the addictive gameplay, the retro graphics and music, it really brings back memories of my childhood gaming days.
Anyway, I really enjoy the Demon Ecosystem and filling the dungeons with monsters. And maybe it's not a good thing, but I really love seeing Badman get captured and watching him kick and flail around like a crying baby when the hero drags him to the surface! That's probably my favorite experience whenever I play.
Any final reasons why the world should join the side of evil and injustice and protect the unholy Badman?
Well, Badman is just trying to protect what's his. If you change your point of view, Badman is basically just a mole trying to guard his nest. I am sure if you try to invade a mole's nest he would fight back, or maybe he would just run away because he doesn't have help from the God of Destruction!
And I think it's fun to be the root of all evil in a video game, since you're supposed to spend all your time being "good" in the real world...right?
We'd like to take this opportunity to thank NIS America for the interview.
Holy Invasion of Privacy, Badman! What Did I Do to Deserve This? will arrive on the PSP platform this summer. If you're as anxious for Badman fun as we are, you can spend the time leading up to its release competing for prizes in the "Holy Hidden Codes, Badman!" contest that NIS America is running on
the official Badman site. What else is there to say but "BM978261WT"?

I want to play this game to see how good the localization is, because it sounds like they worked pretty hard on that aspect. I will cross my fingers and hope I win a PSP!
