lisanne Hi! And things.

Title: Own up then: who plays Second Life?
Posted: August 20, 2007 (04:49 PM)
Who actually plays Second Life? Anyone? I'm always hearing about it, but no-one appears to actually be prepared to admit to playing it. This is possibly because you can't actually do anything that isn't already available to you in First Life - or actual living. So why would anyone bother taking on a Second Life experience?

So I wonder, is anyone prepared to admit to playing Second Life in a public setting? Come now, let's have a show of hands.

I was blissfully unaware of Second Life until Something Awful started doing articles on it. Apparently, it's a lot of furries creating gigantic virtual penises and virtual raping each other. It also seems to get a lot of press because the company running it makes a lot of money off stupid people.

Link me.

Edit: Oh, uh, maybe I should read the whole thing first.

Is virtual rape still a crime? If it's furries doing it, then it should be...

if so, the prison industrial complex is going to jizz itself over Halo 2 body-humping.

Second Life is only fascinating for those who never play videogames. I've seen like a dozen articles about the "game" in newspapers, TV news pieces and magazines, but not ONE in a videogame-themed publication or website. Likewise, I've never known anyone who played or even knew anything about the game.

I'm starting to think nobody actually DOES play that game and that it only has a theoretical existence. After all, surely anyone who's ever played a game would look at Second Life's alleged description and think "Oh, so it's like The Sims, except more boring".

More boring than The Sims? Could such a thing be possible?!

Well, I haven't played SL, but from what I can see it's like The Sims except without the ability to do anything :P

My impression mirrors Mart's - Second Life is for non-gamers. It's also one of two hilarious examples of how "offline people", if I may call them such, take things seriously that we've learned to laugh at long ago. Second Life, and more recently, Wikipedia - that Wikiscanner thingy means it's all over the news everywhere. "So and so edited their page! This and that page was vandalized!" Err, yeah. That's been Wikipedia for years, folks.
