Title: I have an Xbox 360 now
Posted: November 22, 2005 (11:34 AM)
It took a lot of standing around this morning in 20-degree weather (more than two hours, actually), but I have an Xbox 360 now. It's not the one with the hard drive. However, it's a system, and I have some games for it. Rather than write a long entry here detailing the trials and tribulations I went through in further detail, I'm going to go play some games!

Ridge Racer 6, Perfect Dark Zero and Kameo: Elements of Power were the ones I chose. I wanted some variety and such, particularly since this purchase made me flat out broke and I won't be buying games for awhile. A long while.

From what I hear, Perfect Dark Zero is the 360's best so far. IS THIS TRUE, JASON?!

Actually, I heard Call of Duty 2 is the best. Personally, Project Gotham Racing 3 looks the most appealing to me.

PGR3 is the only game that makes me wish I had a 360. Perfect Dark looks nice, too.

But still a weak launch lineup overall.

Title: More 360's?

Here's a little further info about future XBOX 360 shipments. I am employed by Best Buy within the media department, and all this information has been provided to us by Microsoft.

There is some good news and some bad news regarding any pre-Christmas XBOX 360 shipments. The good news is that there will in fact be a second wave coming. The bad news is that only one retail chain will be selected to receive it.

Obviously many people are more than a little upset at having being forced to purchase packages that included unwanted accessories just to get their hands on a system. There is a little more reasoning to these packages than squeezing every last dime from those who waited in line. Microsoft has formed a contest of sorts among retailers. The second shipment of XBOX 360's will be sent out to whichever retailer has sold the most accessories at launch. Every controller, memory card, cable, etc. is another tally on the running score sheet.

As of yet, it's still too early to say exactly where these systems will be sent. I think it's safe to say that it probably won't be a department store along the lines of Target or Wal-Mart (the latter having received as few as 4 units at some locations). My money is on Gamestop. Though Circuit City and Best Buy had more systems per store, Gamestop has them beat in store numbers.

Given the pitiful amount of systems that Microsoft was able to provide at launch, do not expect a pre-Christmas shipment to be anything overly substantial. At the most, it will be a second chance for those hardcore enough to head out for another parking lot camping trip.

(Update from yesterday's info. There will perhaps be a second shipment to ALL retailers, regardless of accessory sales. This is still tentative and dependent upon how many systems can be manufactured. Again, don't count on anything but a handful of 360's.)

Is Perfect Dark Zero worth getting an XBOX 360 for?

It's not bad, but I wouldn't consider it a system seller.

Are any of the games system sellers? I like the look of King Kong, but I can't see how it's going to be all that different to the Xbox version.

I don't think there's really a title in the launch lineup that is, no. With that said, the collection of them isn't all that bad, and there are of course great games announced for down the road. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the system, but I would hesitate to recommend buying it at eBay prices.
