Title: HGWars Wiped - Fresh Start for All!
Posted: March 14, 2009 (04:40 AM)
Over the past few days, I've done a lot more work on HGWars than I had planned. It's a lot closer to a working game than I had expected it to be by now, but there have been numerous changes and I need to see how they play out.
Therefore, I've wiped the characters and everyone will need to start fresh. This has a few benefits and will allow me to more easily examine potential balance issues now that everyone will be starting fresh with all current safeguards in place. I'm interested to see what different strategies people will try now that everyone will have to gain stats the same way, and without ridiculous real estate schemes giving some people more gold than they really even needed.
There certainly are more features coming, but I'm not sure how soon anything major will happen so this was a natural time to start fresh. Over the next few days, any work I do will be geared toward slightly tweaking what's already there to make sure that we have a firm foundation before I consider new features. I won't have as much time to make adjustments, anyway, so this will likely be a good opportunity to play for awhile without worrying about another wipe a day or two down the road.
Thanks for all of your help so far in testing everything and making this project even more fun than I had expected. I hope that you'll all continue to enjoy and play the game as we move closer to a 'beta' version in the weeks to come.
For those who are just now hearing about this, the URL is:
I'll hope to see you on the battlefield soon, impending victims!

My exp. keeps reseting to zero -- you coded this in on purpose, I wager!

Any idea when you lose the EXP? Is it after someone attacks and kills you? Or after someone attacks you and neither person wins? Or after someone attacks you and you win?
Edit: Nevermind. I think I fixed it. For real this time.

Hm... Yeah. The XP thing definitely seems fixed now. However, when you level up from winning a battle, it doesn't tell you. I'll show you:
Also, energy isn't regained when levelinig up from a fight. But I'm not sure if you intended that on purpose or not.
I do like the vault and cleric inclusions. They're definitely handy.

Levelling up through battle doesn't always restore all your energy/guts points, either.
We should also look at a way for the player to be referred to as female, if they're that way inclined.
We also need to have some clear in-game description on what the stats do. I wager some people have invested in stats that are completely useless to their character. Perhaps once this is clear we should give a one-time-only option to redistribute your stats?
In other news, I'm in strained contact with someone who might be interested in providing some artwork for the game. She's a so-so pixel artist, and I think that kind of style would compliment the game. Let me know.

The descriptions for the Attack and Wisdom stat list the wrong characters.

No they don't, WQ. They're precisely right.

Oh. Sorry. I must have not read the "not".

I've updated the 'stats' page so that the useless stat upgrade option doesn't appear for a given character. Fighters, Thieves and Beasts won't see an option to increase their WIS and Clerics, Mages and Bards won't have the option to increase their ATK.
As far as attacking goes, it's no longer possible to attack anyone who is more than 5 levels below you. Additionally, you can only attack people who have 25% or more of their HP left. This should prevent the common situation where people can't even get on their feet after dying because the minute they reach a small sliver of life, someone attacks. Now a little more strategy should be involved and a bit less luck.

Heheh. Alright. This stuff's working better now, I think. Something I want to know, though....
Why don't you die? LOL Did you dump all your points into strength or something? Both me and EmP tried killing you and you don't die.... And he has more right to kill you than I do because he's like uber.
EDIT: It still doesn't tell you when you level up in a fight. But I think the "not recovering your energy" issue with that's been fixed... though I'm still not sure if you intended energy to not be recovered when you level up in a fight or not.
And it still calls me a man, though EmP says it calls me a girl for other people, so I guess it's just on my side of things. That one's not a big deal, either, though, and is more amusing than anything. Haha.
But yeah. This stuff's working out quite well, I think. At least for now. It seems well-balanced and there aren't any more serious glitches that I can see.
Great job. This game rocks.

First of all, I have discovered a game-breaking bug that we need to discuss as soon as possible, Jason.
Other than that, it's turning out great Venter. =D Here's some feedback on what could be some potential additions in future updates:
1. Fix the bug I mentioned before. I won't discuss it in a public area to minimize possible damage. Please speak to me on aim when you can so we can get this fixed.
2. How about having additional options in the healing shop? Sure, you can cure yourself to max HP by spending 100g*HP missing, but what if you only want, say, 20 HP to jump back into the fray? having some options for some smaller healing packs may not be a bad idea.
3. Putting all your cash into your vault isn't a bad idea, but... what if you fail at a job right after doing it? In doing so, you just get "so and so took x gold because you fucked up" despite the fact that you don't even have x gold to take.

The goal is for every consumable stat to refill when you level up, whether you level up in a fight or from completing a job. So that's what I've made the game do, so far as I know.
I am surviving attacks because I did precisely what was suggested: I put most of my stats into defending myself from physical attacks that would otherwise obliterate me. Some characters are capable of doing pretty hefty damage to me in spite of that, as I just learned, so we'll see how things go...

The offline earning doesn't seem to be working right. Despite owning numerious plots of land, when I awoke this morning, I had a little over 100G earnings. I disapprove of this.

That was probably done intentionally to make it harder to win super-loads of cash when you're not even playing for like 8 hours like I was in the pre-updated version. Makes sense to me.

I'm actually not sure what happened for him. The game is designed to award cash for up to 5 hours of inactivity, which seems like a fair number to me. To test, last night I put all of my gold in my vault, so that I had 0, then closed out of HGWars. This morning when I returned, I had 5100 gold waiting for me, which is right what I should have had. It seems to be working fine to me!
