Title: The Rings, they haunt me!
Posted: July 10, 2008 (03:39 PM)
I've been superstitiously refusing to talk about my luck with my Xbox 360 because I don't like saying "My Xbox 360 has treated me well, knock on wood."

"Knock on wood" is such a stupid, superstitious expression that makes no sense at all when you consider its roots in the occult. Anyway, I haven't been wanting to say that and so I haven't talked about how lucky I'd been with the Xbox 360.

Today, that luck ended. I was playing through the opening tutorial in Operation Darkness and the game froze. My first thought was "Wow, this isn't a very polished game if it freezes in a tutorial." My second thought upon booting it back up was "Oh, crap. Four red rings!" My second thought was wrong, though. It's actually three red rings, which apparently is even worse.

And so it is that I'm now talking about my Xbox 360 and its red rings. I knew I'd dodged the bullet for a long time, since it seems like everyone who buys an Xbox 360 eventually has those red rings, but I thought maybe I would remain forever one of the lucky ones.

Alas, it was not to be. I've contacted Microsoft by e-mail (since I literally can't afford to call them on the phone) and hopefully they will take care of this at minimal or no cost to me. It's just... this is some seriously bad timing for me. If the system is still covered then it's better timing than it could be, but if I have to pay for anything other than gas to drive it to the post office--and even that's a stretch--I'm screwed.

Dang it! Why couldn't Microsoft have made a system that wouldn't DO this crap?

Wait. When you say four, do you mean that all four of the lights in the ring are red? If so, that's not necessarily a bad thing. The Red Ring of Death is three red lights. I believe four simply means the system isn't plugged in correctly.

Edit: Yeah, read this.

Oops. No, it's three lights. It just looked like four at a glance because the one is receiving some faint twinges of light from the other three. So yeah... three red rings. :(

Observe as I push my luck.

My 360 is all perfect and will never turn on me, ever!

Send me that game.

Microsoft claims that only 16% of systems break down. It's definitely higher than that. Probably two out of every three people I know who own a 360 had this problem at some point, and some people are on their third or fourth consoles.

And I agree, it's probably the crappiest made console of all time.

A) That's tragic, and here's hoping for a quick replacement.

B) Operation Darkness? I really hope that wasn't for personal enjoyment.

Atlus sent me a copy for review, pup. I was actually really looking forward to it and I still hope to play/enjoy it because it looks like a really great game... but I may never know if the repair takes ages and I have to have someone else cover it in my stead.

When my 360 took a nosedive, I blogged about my experience with it on this very website. It's buried somewhere in my archives... I gave it the epic name of... THE RED RING SAGA.

Anyway, even with a delay of several days (on my behalf) of shipping the 360 out thanks to my job's fucked up hours, I still got my refurbished unit back very quickly. The only cost to me was the price of the gas it took to drive to the UPS Store. Hell, Microsoft even supplied me with the tape to seal the box up with.
