My book the cheapest you'll ever find it

Powell's is offering a used copy of "Defiant Light" for less than $6.00 right now. Some other seller is, too. If you've been thinking "Wow, I really need to pick up Jason's book one of these decades," I figure that's about as little as you'd pay for it unless I pay a bunch of money to get some copies from Xlibris and then give them away on the site one of these years. Why wait, though? Go here:

Yes, there are two copies available and both at that terrific price. The book usually costs closer to $20, which is probably part of why it hasn't sold more copies (with another part being that I haven't really promoted it).

It'll take longer to get a new copy because they have to print it first, so you'd be waiting for several weeks. Purchases are welcome, of course. Those are some very polarising reviews... 1 star and 5 stars. I just have one question... did you write the 5 star review? >_>

Both reviews are suspect to me. One because it's written by "a customer" which gives me no indication of who wrote it and the second because it is written by someone who claims to read 400 books a year and yet has only written two reviews in his entire time on Amazon. That means the only reason he would choose to write about this particular book is if he felt very strongly about it and, as statistics majors will know, extreme feelings rarely represent the mean of a situation.

There's absolutely no way to tell if it's going to be a good read except by picking it up and giving it a shot. I'm tempted to do so, though you would definitely see a review from me and a highly honest one.

I noticed it was written ten years ago. Do you think it is not reflective of your current level of writing, Jason?

It's one of the last novels that I finished, unfortunately. I don't have a finished, polished novel after it to show if I've improved, though in general my belief is that my writing HAS improved. I've finished two novels that could probably be better than it with some polish, but I never went back and polished them. I'm working on a current novel that I sometimes write on that I'm very happy with, as well, but... I guess I honestly don't know the answer to your question, Zipp. Defiant Light is a very unique and interesting tale, to my mind, and people I know who have read it keep pestering me to write a sequel. By that, I mean they did the standard stuff like reading it and saying they loved it (you know, stuff a family feels obligated to do), but now they're recommending it to their friends and keep badgering me about writing more in that world. One of my published writer friends had generally good things to say about it, as well. It's just hard for me to recommend it at full price. At the price I've linked above, though, I'd buy it myself if I didn't already have a copy. I read through it again two or three years back and generally enjoyed myself. It's essentially YA fantasy/sci-fi, which is what I seem best at writing, anyway.

Jerec, I didn't write the 5-star review myself, but I also wouldn't place any stock in it. The person who did write it was an acquaintance of mine who didn't even read the book. We were bored at work one day and she whipped it up without me asking her to do so. At the time we both worked for a company providing Amazon.ca customer service. For a year or so of my life, I was actually one of the people responsible for approving or rejecting reviews users submitted to Amazon.com. Mwa ha ha ha ha!
