HGWars: of fortresses and mercenaries
March 16, 2009

Okay, so I added another feature to HGWars today, but only because it's one that I'm really excited about.

Now you can place mercenaries within your fortress. They cost varying amounts apiece and they will boost your stats, depending on what mercenary types you hire. I believe that I have successfully coded them into the battle system so that everything is working, but it's early to tell because right now I can only afford one mercenary and people keep kicking my butt before I can even recover. But whatever. I'm not bitter at EmP them. Not one bit!

It's your own fault for breaking my job of choice. And cheating me out of offline earnings.

This entire game is made to spite me, and I still kick everyone's arse.

Hm... Are battle deaths being recorded properly? I never noticed this before (if it even was a problem before), and I can't imagine why it'd be a problem now, but twice tonight battles (maybe) should have gone differently than they did.

The first is here:

overdrive mounted a vicious attack and dealt 1 damage to wolfqueen001. wolfqueen001 survived and was able to counter-attack. As a result, wolfqueen001 retaliated with an attack that dealt 80 damage to overdrive. wolfqueen001 was able to hold off the attack and chased overdrive away. During the escape, overdrive dropped 5 gold! wolfqueen001 received 1 experience point(s) for winning this battle.

I did exactly 80 damage to OD, which is his exact amount of health, so it should have said he died. But this one's minor since I still won as I should have.

The second (actually occurred earlier this evening, but whatever) was between me and woodhouse.

woodhouse mounted a vicious attack and dealt 28 damage to wolfqueen001. wolfqueen001 survived and was able to counter-attack. As a result, wolfqueen001 retaliated with an attack that dealt 92 damage to woodhouse. What an unexpectedly harsh blow! It should come as no particular surprise that woodhouse was slain as a result! The good news? wolfqueen001 walked away with 0 gold coins. The bad news was all for woodhouse, who failed to walk away at all... wolfqueen001 received 1 experience point(s) for winning this battle.

He had done the exact damage needed to kill me yet somehow I survived and slew him instead.

And just a few minutes ago, one with EmP who likes to attack me when I'm not paying attention:

EmP mounted a vicious attack and dealt 64 damage to wolfqueen001. It was a critical attack! wolfqueen001 survived and was able to counter-attack. As a result, wolfqueen001 retaliated with an attack that dealt 44 damage to EmP. EmP waged a successful war and was the victor. He walked away from the battle with 11 additional gold!

Before this fight, he'd attacked me but I survived and had done 44 damage to him. Having only 87 health, my retaliation should have been just enough to kill him. However, I'm uncertain how you actually determine the victor of a battle. From what I can tell, it's whoever deals the most damage for the most part, but even if the attacker did more damage, if the defender killed the attacker, the defender should win. I thought that's how it worked before, but I don't think I've ever had exact damage deaths before, either.

I suppose it's possible that in all these cases, our respective counters ticked down at the last second thus giving us 1 more point of health in which to withstand an attack, but man... that just seems so rare. And it didn't seem like the case at the time, but that would sort of make sense.

As a somewhat unrelated side note, god DAMN I get critical hits against me a lot. Good grief. It's not that evident with these examples, but man. Dodging, too. Luck really hates me or something in this game. Heh.
