User Help > Related Links
If you're a webmaster and you've built a nice little Internet shrine to your favorite game, there's some good news: now you can suggest the site to staff, and if we like it, we may very well include it on this site. There are, however, restrictions. If you're interested, please read through the following information carefully before submitting your site. Staff members will assume you're acquainted with the details.
How do related links work?
When someone visits the site, the front page greets them with details about the most recent submissions. From there, they can click to read more of a particular review. However, there are many submissions archived in the site that simply won't fit on the front page. In these cases, a user can browse by system, then game. If you've ever viewed a game profile on the site, you know this is the page that displays all site content for that specific game, from staff and user reviews to guides, cheats, and fan fiction. There also are news headlines and, as of November 1, 2003, there is the 'Related Links' section.
This section will display sites that staff members have personally visited and feel are valuable contributions to the Internet. Usually, they are sites related specifically to the game in question, and are the sort of sites that we believe will help gamers to further enjoy the title.
What does this mean for webmasters?
If you've made a site for one of your favorite games, you've probably discovered that it's hard to get the word out. There are so many sites on the Internet that the odds of someone finding yours are rather slim. You want to do everything in your power to make sure people even know you exist!
That's where the 'Related Links' feature comes in handy. Gamers who view a game profile on HonestGamers.com are there because that game is of particular interest to them. So if they see that a site is recommended, they're much more likely to click and visit than the casual gamer with no preference. Not only that, but they'll probably stick around a little longer to explore all their options. In short, they're just the traffic you want heading to your site.
Okay, so what does it cost me?
There's no fee for a listing. However, we do appreciate it when you return the favor, and sometimes we require it. When you suggest a site, make sure you indicate whether or not you are willing to place a button on your site. This will affect our decision. If we really like your site, we might post it anyway, but most of the time we will require that you place that button.
What about the button? How big is it? Why do you require it?
As you can see, the button is no larger than a typical button that you may have seen on numerous other web sites. Unlike a banner, the button only takes up a small amount of space and might even spruce up your site a bit. Consider that the average banner is 468x60 pixels in size, while the button we ask you to place is only 88x31.
If your listing is approved, we'll respond by e-mail and will include the code you should enter into your site. All you have to do is copy and paste. The code includes your specific reference id, which allows us to track how many people are visiting your site from ours, and vice-versa. If multiple related sites are listed on our site for a given game, your link's placement will be determined by the number of people you send to us. This way, we all get something out of the deal.
Okay, I want to go for it. How do I let you know?
If you have a site you want listed, just click the Contact button on the left side of the site and you'll find a form you can send to staff. We usually respond within 24 hours. If you do contact us about listing your site, please include the following:
* The single game your site covers.
* Your web site's URL.
* Your name.
* The approximate amount of traffic that comes to your site each month.
* Your contact e-mail address.
* Let us know whether or not you are prepared to place a site button.
Once we have this information, we'll make a decision as quickly as possible. If you have agreed to place a button and your site has been approved, we'll include the required source code in the e-mail. You will have 48 hours to place the button, and we ask that you put it in a location no less noticeable than the majority of other advertising on your web site. Otherwise, your site may be removed from our listings.
Once my link is placed, what do I do then?
You don't have to do anything. If you stop working on your site or it moves, you should let us know. However, we will check up on linked sites from time to time. This is so we can be sure they still work. Also, we will check to see if the promised button is in place.
Wait, I have more questions. My case is a special circumstance.
We realize there are exceptions to any rule, and we're always glad to discuss terms with webmasters. Feel free to contact us with any questions this page doesn't answer and we'll do our best to answer you promptly.
We hope that the information on this page was helpful and answered your questions. If it did not, or if you'd like to explore the site or "Help" section further, please use one of the links below to proceed accordingly.
