Adventures in Windows XP
August 01, 2017

I've seen some impassioned PC builds oriented around DOS, and even Windows 95/2000, but XP is where things started to get nasty. Microsoft's marketing techniques were becoming more savvy, and the Operating System increasingly complex. As a result I haven't seen XP as a go-to for many. Why bother with the mess when you can install Windows 2000 and get the best of both old school worlds?

...what did XP stand for, anyway? Take it as a smiley and it pretty much sums up how people felt about it. Anyway...

A snappy interface and DirectX support. What else do you need, anyway? Since Windows XP was officially relegated to End of Life in 2014, that's opened the floodgates to cheap as dirt hardware and serviceable software. Mostly.

If you want old hardware to run, you grab a flavour of Linux, BYOKAM and you're good to go for a modern web browser and a host of respectable productivity applications. Programs. Software. However, if you want to play old games on Windows, certain games just won't run, so you can go virtual, or actually build a machine capable of running them for real.

It's been a fascinating experience, and it's interesting to see what will run on XP and what won't. Of course, next I'll be trying out an archive of Atari 2600 games I picked up from Humble Bundle that is DOA under the Windows 10 umbrella. By that token, Sonic R should run... in the awkward way it has. How it behaves at 2.8Ghz, well... that remains to be seen.

In unrelated happenings, I'm looking for work, and I recently submitted Sliver of Light to another publisher, which I've portioned out into 30K chunks as a series under that name. TOR's been dead quiet for seven months, so I'll take that hint and move on. The pacing works out better as a series, anyway, so it was a good move.

If anyone would like to proof/peer review the manuscript, drop me a message somewhere between here and Discord and I'll hook you up. In fact, I'd love the feedback. Peer review does delightful things for one's perspective.

On a more topical note, I've been playing 20XX, Bloons TD5 (which I'm terrible at), Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara and Gas Guzzlers Combat Carnage. All good fun so far. Oh yeah, my run of 199X hit a dead stop, literally, when I couldn't find an interactable so's ah could progress t'the next room.

That's just annoying.

Have you looked into getting an agent to represent your work? You might have better luck that way. It's not quite a requirement with most publishers, but it seems to come pretty close. A good agent can also help you negotiate terms during the sale, if it comes to that, so my plan is to eventually find an agent (if I can) and go that route.

I understand some publishers won't consider your work without one, and it's been a thought. This is probably a good time to take the matter more seriously.

Here's a double post on my blog - I've submitted a Query email to an agency up here in the "frosty" North. It was a good prompt, Jason. Thank you.
