After a while the battles can get long and tedious, but fortunately it has enough gruesome FMV cutscenes to leave you gasping for more. The game doesn't have many extras; it's pretty straightforward.

The whole time Aya scours a given area, she'll need to be on her guard because... well, scratch that. Even if she's on her guard, she'll still discover the joy of random encounters. Now, don't get me wrong. I like unexpected opportunities to shoot down creatures of the night as much as the next guy (or blast them with my special attacks), but here the whole process just feels odd.

The main problem is that whenever Aya gets into a fight, the game has to load in the monsters, which takes a couple of seconds. During this time, the screen freezes and turns gray, essentially screaming, “Hey stupid! You are going to be in a fight. Gird those loins and start shooting!”

Particularly nice in the opening scene is a pan across the Statue of Liberty — rendered so beautifully, yet bearing a disturbingly sad look upon its face... the setting is so quiet and calm that you just know something horrible is going to happen.

It's the night before Christmas, and the visage of the Statue of Liberty is solemn. A panning camera slides briefly across the New York cityscape, but pauses to contemplate this peculiarity. A sparse snow is falling, and Liberty's lips are puckered in a pout, her head tilted downward looking worryingly at the ever-present hustle below, a thin blotch cascading from the melancholy right eye and down the cheek. Is it a tear?
