You'll be wishing you could see more of a stage (each episode has unique challenges and alterations to the geography), but no such luck. Instead, you're stuck continually rechallenging some lame test, like popping 20 balloons on a roller coaster ride, or fighting the high-maintenance camera while completing one of the retro stages mentioned earlier.

This freeform sense of interaction with the environment helps immensely in immersing the player into the game’s sunny, tropical atmosphere, and lets the player become comfortable with Mario’s new moves, most of which involve the water pack.

To be blunt, I hated Nintendo’s approach to a 3-D Mario game. The idea of playing through the same level eight times, isn’t exactly my idea of a fun game. Super Mario 64 is one of the most popular Mario titles, and arguably, games of all time. Its unique mixture of platforming and exploration was indeed a match that seemed to be made in heaven, but it was victim of its own circumstances. It took six years to come up with a sequel to Mario 64. Six years. You'd think that would be enough time to make sure they'd get it right. After all, this is the latest in Nintendo's largest and arguably most important franchise, so it certainly deserves special devotion. How, then, can we explain what happened here?
