However, ED adds to the incessant zombie slashing with the innovative ''Magick'' system. Aside from basic healing spells, the different magicks include enchanting items for added power or solving puzzles, creating a magick-proof shield to aid you, or revealing invisible enemies or objects, among others.

Eternal Darkness (ED) arrived for the GameCube with a fearsome aura about it. In common with Resident Evil Zero, this horror opus was originally slated for release on the Nintendo 64, before that console's premature exit prompted ED's migration to the next console generation and its entering into an even more drawn out development period. When the game finally emerged, it commanded immediate awe from anxious GameCubers, who had heard that it was going to be the next killer app, yet...

Turn on your console and you’re greeted with a grainy, evil-voiced quote from Edgar Alan Poe. As this rather cheerful quote suggests, Eternal Darkness takes its influence from that of the great literary horror novels, especially those of H. P. Lovecraft. To be honest, Eternal Darkness blatantly rips off much of Lovecraft’s Cthulu novels, and this is no bad thing for a survival horror game seeking distinction.

Brow furrowed in concentration you guide your character through the heavy wooden door and straight into a room heaving with grotesque zombies. They turn towards you as one, arms outstretched and moaning. No problem, you’re armed to the teeth with various guns, blades and magical powers. You go to aim your weapon, but your character does not respond. “Your Controller is not registering. Please check it is connected properly” reads an official notice on screen. In a panic you dive for the Gamecube...

The idea of survival horror is a fascinating one. While films are usually identified by aesthetic and emotive theme - fantasy, or action, or science-fiction - games tend to be categorised by activity. Do you shoot in this game? Then it's a shooting game. Do you strategise in it? Then it's a strategy. Videogame genre naming conventions leave very little room for thematics. Maybe that's to be expected. Games are, after all, primarily about doing stuff.

This is one of those games you wait and wait for, hoping that is everything you expected it to be. And it turns out it's not everything you expected it to be, it turns out to be so much more. Eternal Darkness is one of those games that stood out. Originally to be released by the Nintendo 64, then planned to be released on the early life of the Gamecube it kept being pushed off. Originally I only wanted this game because of the weak Gamecube lineup. That is why I bought the game, Gamecube really ...

I’m fairly certain that the scariest thing I’ve ever experienced in a video game happened in Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem. In one of the game’s many stops along the timeline of an ancient book detailing the history of a dark, unseen force, I found myself in the shoes of a Persian swordsman named Karim, who was journeying into the desert to claim a legendary treasure for his lover. The Forbidden City that Karim came upon looked startlingly similar to the one I’d explored as Roman sol...
