The settings don't just differ from area to area --- they completely change in theme within stages. Your five-minute horseback ride --- during which, as in every level, you battle with a midpoint boss --- is followed by an entry into a high tech, futuristic enemy base, where the enemies no longer toy with spears and ninja stars, but rapid-fire ammunition.

With Shinobi III, a new evil has reared its head, demanding of Joe more side-scrolling, projectile-hurling escapades! You and Joe both reminisce, silently cognizant of the style and thunder of his previous path to bloody revenge (forget the offbeat Shadow Dancer for the moment). The Revenge of Shinobi in fact, was the game that cemented his status as hero extraordinaire. That mission had been diabolical in its conception, and his response to its dangers was legendary. Would this latest challenge prove as worthy? Would he?

Joe Musashi, renowned master of the Shinobi, may have peacefully gone on a well-earned vacation, but it seems that Neo Zeed apparently never learnt it was futile to argue against the world's greatest ninja. To reassert this fact, Neo Zeed even went as far as placing a bounty on the ninja's head upon its stylish return. As a self-respecting ninja, Joe nevertheless anticipated this move from the powerful organization; all the time that elapsed since his last 'mission' was spen...
