A vast game of utterly mad possibilities. There's not enough of a culture for Guerrilla to be proclaimed a true masterpiece, or even a revolution, but it's not a long way off. Rarely has open-world mayhem been so invigorating, so satisfying and hilarious. Far and away the best in the series so far, Guerrilla is the absolute statement of Volition's explosive plan - and Red Faction would struggle to return to its linear routes after this outstanding effort.

You'll kill soldiers with one swing and take down buildings with just a bit of effort. It's hilariously overpowered, crumbling concrete walls like they were made of styrofoam. In third-person over-the-shoulder shooters, it's rare that a melee weapon is this indispensable. You won't mind that the game forces you to hold it at all times, as there's something indubitably MANLY about running up to things and effortlessly destroying them by swinging a mighty hammer of the gods.

With Red Faction: Guerrilla's campaign mode being a sandbox game (taking place on Mars), I knew I was bound to get caught in some crazy situations. One such early instance was when I traveled to an apartment complex after a guy on the radio asked for help. Not even a minute after I got there, all hell broke loose: armored vehicles with turrets, tanks, and a buttload of soldiers came spilling into the area, ready to kill, kill, kill.
