Dragon Warrior III is easily one of the greatest triumphs on the Nintendo Entertainment System, a gem that sparkles even in an age where all the other games on the block have larger assets. Not so much a game as an experience, this is one RPG that you owe it to yourself if the term 'role-playing' excites you even a little.

When I set out from my hometown in “Dragon Warrior III,” the first thing I saw was a tower on a solitary island. I couldn’t resist wondering what treasures lay within the spire and what dangers guarded them. In my quest to vanquish the odious Lord Baramos and avenge my father, I made it my first order of business to find a way into those walls and see what was inside.

Let’s face it — Enix’s Dragon Warrior III doesn’t get off to the most riveting start. Proving that plot devices aren’t necessary to kick off a quest, your gallant (and anonymous) hero is called into service to save the world from demonic powerhouse Baramos because......well, your father was this brave hero who’s come up missing in his attempt to save the world and you’re apparently everyone’s choice to finish the job he started.

While not the leap that the fourth installment is, it provides a new gaming experience set in the Dragon Warrior universe. If you're a fan of role playing games, then you can do a lot worse then Dragon Warrior 3.
