Ahead, a kettle lies over a burner, boiling a sludgy mixture while killer bees bomb at you kamikaze-style from the right. You know that a single misstep will turn you into an appetizer, so you watch a bee and then plot your jump as the space is clear. Suddenly, your bushy charge is plummeting into the soup and instant death, the victim of a crate to the head. It appears your devious cohort was waiting for you to let down your guard.

“Chip & Dale: Rescue Rangers” is a lot like “Super Mario Brothers 2,” but it’s much less tiring. Actually, it has an energy that’s infectious. Its two characters, Chip and Dale, move at a brisk pace, like you might expect chipmunks to. They lift and chuck crates like pros, plowing through approaching enemies and unearthing all manner of item pick-ups. The action is so snappy, you might find yourself, as I did, becoming entranced by the rapid-fire hopping and throwing. This is a lot of fun.

Chip and Dale: Rescue Rangers represents a rare game on the NES - A character license that isn't wasted on a crappy game. Especially considering that the game is made by Disney.
