Not only that, it succeeded: whereas the “technically brilliant” titles of yesteryear now wallow in their “good for their time” dubiety, Altered Beast remains the same guilty pleasure it always has. Undoubtedly, I think it was its vision all along to become the cheesy cult-classic of the video game world, to be so exuberantly, intriguingly ridiculous it would never be forgotten. Keep laughing at the thought, the absurd notion its lambasted legacy has only helped it become what it is. It’s Santa Claus Conquers the Martians. It won.

Altered Beast is the old and rusty classic that most gamers see as poor nowadays. It was the first game on the Sega’s Mega Drive, the classic 16-bit system known better as the Genesis. It was the first of Sega’s arcade games to get a port that looked similar to its arcade counterpart. Back then it was quite big but nowadays it’s something you can get some cheap thrills out of and play again at a later date.

Timing is everything in the business of video games. A simple difference of a year can radically change everything. Just ask Sega; they’ve been on both ends of the stick with all of their system releases. The Genesis capitalized on a public that was fed up with constant delays to the Super Nintendo. However, the Saturn and Dreamcast both showed signs of being ill-conceived consoles that were not powerful enough to satisfy developers.

There are some moments in life that are bound to be a bit special. In the early nineties, to many happy gamers the arrival of Sega's Mega Drive console was one of those moments. They bought their machine, they plugged it in to the telly, many slotted in Altered Beast into the console and switched it on. The tension was growing... would it all be a huge waste of money, or would it be the greatest thing ever? There's a title screen with impressive, thumping arcade-style music: all good so far. The...
