Nintendo's game is immediately engaging, taking you from a powerful cinema and starting you off with a boss encounter and a thrilling, timed escape sequence that shrewdly doubles as a training ground for your basic skills. And Super Metroid concludes with even greater fanfare, showcasing a wildly chaotic final boss confrontation followed by a stunning, controller-dropping, emotional twist that is simply unforgettable.

Metroid is one of those series that's infallible as far as Nintendo fans are concerned. They perceive a single negative utterance regarding the series as the most heinous crime imaginable. The reverence fans hold arguably has nothing to do with the first and second games in the Metroid series, though -- it's the third game that launched the series to the stratospheric level of quality that fans have come to expect. Originally released in 1994, Super Metroid represents the...

It’s raining. Not like a little sprinkle or a fine drizzle, but an all-out torrent. The water is running steadily down the sides of Samus Aran’s spaceship, sending mini-waterfalls cascading to the muddy ground below. No one is going to mind, though. The natives of Zebes have long since cleared out of here. The only welcoming committee Samus could have expected included a bunch of laser gun-toting Space Pirates and a host of intergalactic monstrosities. But right now, there’s only this vas...

While I may not enjoy them, I at least understand why other people like certain games that I can't stand playing. The Otogi series' simplistic brawling has always rubbed me the wrong way, for instance, yet I see the allure of exploring its gorgeous locales and purifying things with a big sword. Similarly, while I don't like Streets of Rage 2 thanks to its cookie-cutter cretins, I can see why a game that lets you punch your way through everything from a baseball field to a pirate ship while liste...

Metroids. Most terrifying of alien life-forms, they float about effortlessly while seeking their prey. Upon spotting a target, they swoop down, clamp down with their mighty jaws, and feast on the energy of their hapless victim. When their hunger is finally satisfied, they float away just as easily, leaving nothing but a hollow shell of their dinner that crumbles with the slightest touch.

Metroid is one of the most famous series that has ever crossed the earth, and one of nintendo's main claim to fame is this series. However, I do not beleive that the first two Metroids were worthy of that fame. Quite frankly they were very disapointing games to me, and I can tell you many other games I'd rather play. Super Metroid, however, is a game that is actually FUN at times. I did not really expect that, after boring my way into the first two Metroids. This is the only game slightly deserv...

Putting into words how great of a game Super Metroid is, is a difficult task. Back in the sometimes gloomy, sometimes upbeat days of 1994, it was rare to find a game that had both a breathtaking adventure full of thrilling gameplay that also featured an enchanting storyline (most other adventures used the worn out damsel in distress tag instead of something original).

It is always amazing to me how incredibly popular the Metroid series has become. The original was a deep and expansive game, but it didn’t have the personality of Super Mario Brothers or the mega-hit stamp of other games. The first sequel was relegated to the Game Boy, land of puzzlers, yet became an action game that survived and thrived. Continual growth was a calling card for both: they lurked and lurked on the Nintendo Power charts for years after their original release. Whe...
