The lack of challenge is the game’s biggest issue, but it opens the playing field to people looking for a more casual experience.

Turning Mario & Co. into paper cut-outs was a surprisingly good on Nintendo’s part. After all, it led to the creation of the excellent Paper Mario RPGs on the Nintendo 64 and Gamecube. Super Paper Mario is the third installment in the series, but it alters the formula to the point where it's almost unrecognizable. The end of the world is nigh. Nations are rising against each other. Calamities are ravaging countless innocents around the planet. And in the Mushroom Kingdom, Princess Peach and Bowser are getting married. That’s right. The classic damsel in distress and ineffectual villain are going to tie the knot and live happily (well, probably just one of them) ever after. The latest instalment of the Paper Mario franchise captures a beauty similar to the paper-folding art of origami; a mixture of vibrant colours, abstract design, and mind-boggling use of 2D and 3D contributes to this, but don’t think Super Paper Mario is a one-trick pony. The side-scrolling action of the classic Mario games, combined with light RPG elements of the Paper Mario sub-franchise, complement each other marvellously.
