Donkey Kong 64 follows closely the tried-and-true Mario/Banjo-Kazooie action-adventure philosophy, and, to enter new levels, you not only need to defeat the bosses, but you also need to collect golden bananas, which you will get when you solve certain puzzles or perform special tasks.

You are running through the jungle -- a virtual jungle, but a jungle nonetheless. Through the jungle you continue to run, you notice the purple textured rocks around you and hear the birdcalls. This jungle is aesthetically pleasing. You run towards a tree, climbing up to the top with your ape-like grip and jump off. But you don't hit the ground. I was disappointed that this didn't live up to the high standard of the SNES' DKC series, but I discovered there was a huge gaming world out there waiting to be explored.

Back in the day, Donkey Kong was content with kidnapping damsels and tossing barrels at plumbers. Thankfully, starting on the Super Nintendo console, he picked up on a new habit: Starring in exciting platform games. In truth, he was only playable in one of the three Donkey Kong Country games, but that's besides the point.
