If you had asked me 12 months ago what I thought of Nintendo's Kirby, chances are I would have compared the little guy to an ill-formed testicle before slapping you across the back of the head. Ask me again today however and I'll happily explain how his touch screen debut is one of the most inventive, 2D action games around.

If anyone has imaginative mascots, it's Nintendo. What, with Mario, Luigi, Wario, and Waluigi, Nintendo has proved time and time again that they know their creativity from their connectivity. In Kirby's case, he was apparently designed after a swelling marshmallow. Now, if you break down the key components of the DS, it's fair to say that Nintendo's gimmick-machine is either going to use its features either just for the hell of it or to use its tools do to what it was supposed to. Nintendo's current policy is to transform the standard way of playing games by introducing innovative tools and methods to games, which would've been extremely unnatural a few years ago. I was going to say that Kirby: Canvas Curse does for the touch screen what Super Mario 64 did for the analog stick, but that isn’t right. The latter standardized the concept of movement in a three-dimensional space and is now the model for console games, whereas the former has been out for over four years now, and I still have yet to witness anything else like it.
