Knights of the Old Republic cleverly flaunts its openness by hiding the linearity it does possess behind a curtain of morality. Both of the aforementioned Jedis arrive at the forgotten planet Taris, a world that has fallen from prosperity and is buckling under the inherent bigotry and specism that runs rife on its streets. Whereas one strides through these streets with his companions proudly beside him, a champion of the people and an upholder of all that is right, the other is free to bludgeon anyone who looks at him funny and take anything valuable they might be carrying.

In that familiar galaxy far, far away, some 4000 years before the long-ago events of the two Star Wars film trilogies, the Republic is threatened by a Sith army led by Darth Malak. Its fate lies with the sultry yet sour-mouthed Jedi Bastilla, who possesses a potent ability called Battle Meditation that allowed her to kill Malak’s former master Revan. She’s not doing so well as the game opens, though, as a Sith armada destroys her vessel and forces her to hide out on Taris, a decaying urban world...

Re-watching Star Wars: Episode III lately, I marveled at the complex politics that the ill-fated prequel-ogy introduced to every nerd’s favorite very, very distant galaxy. Indeed, before the vicious Empire and the heroic Rebellion, there was the noble Republic and the scheming Separatists, and, ho! Before all that, there were the Jedi and the Sith—the religious zealots, if you will, of the interstellar Crusades.
