Sorry, but I haven't yet shared the information about myself that would typically display here. Check back later to see if that changes, or if I instead choose to remain an enigma.

EPL Picks January 19-21
January 19, 2008

Last week, I picked five of ten results correctly and predicted one perfect score.

Reading 1-4 Man Utd

With Reading's back 5 being as abysmal as they are, and considering United's recent form, this is a terrifying fixture for the Royals. Watching the likes of Ingimarsson, Duberry, and Hahnemann trying to contain the likes of Ronaldo, Rooney, and Tevez won't be pretty. But Reading usually play better at home, so they should at least avoid a cricket scoreline.

Birmingham 0-1 Chelsea
Blackburn 2-0 Middlesbrough
Fulham 0-3 Arsenal
Portsmouth 3-0 Derby
Tottenham 2-1 Sunderland
Newcastle 2-0 Bolton
Wigan 1-1 Everton
Man City 3-1 West Ham
Liverpool 2-1 Aston Villa

Netflix is throttling me. Already.
January 16, 2008

I was under the impression they wouldn't do this to free trial or other newer members, but I sure was wrong.

After signing up for the free trial last Wednesday, I received my four DVDs immediately the very next day. "Wow", thought forweg, "this is nothing like Gamefly! These guy is be serious business! Maybe I'll even become a paying member if they keep this up!" I ended up sending two back Friday and two back Monday. Alas, this must have been quick enough to set off their throttling mechanisms full-force. Everything I'd read about throttled customers is now happening to me:

1. The DVDs I sent back Monday reached them Tuesday, yet the DVDs I sent back Friday have supposedly not yet been received. Yeah. The Netflix throttling computers are apparently too stupid to fool people properly.

January 12, 2008

Predictions for today and tomorrow's EPL matches. I've been picking all season and wish I had kept track of my results up to now.

Arsenal 3-1 Birmingham
Aston Villa 3-2 Reading
Chelsea 2-1 Tottenham
Derby 1-1 Wigan
Everton 2-0 Man City
Middlesbrough 0-1 Liverpool
West Ham 2-1 Fulham
Man Utd 3-0 Newcastle
Sunderland 1-1 Portsmouth
Bolton 1-0 Blackburn

Edit: I predicted five of ten results correctly and predicted one match perfectly.

I don't have any other blogs and I'm too lazy to start my own. Yep.

Recent Asian films seen:

Maborosi (Kore-eda, 1994) - Becomes my favorite film ever, visually (maybe along with Millennium Mambo). The final "funeral" scenes were in particular incredible. Wasn't really emotionally connected to it as I think I was supposed to be. I adored the film regardless. A+

After Life (Kore-eda, 1998) - Slightly disappointing coming immediately after Maborosi, maybe even a little boring at times. Still really, really liked it for reasons I'm not aware of. I just greatly enjoy Kore-eda's unique brand of "minimalism" (poor word), which is so distinct from someone like Tsai. B+

One month anniversary
December 10, 2007

This week's Asian Film log:

Audition (Miike, 1999) - This was my first Miike film, and it was pretty much exactly as I expected it to be. Quite cheesy, but lightly enjoyable regardless. Charming narrative through most of the film, then the sudden, totally xtreeeeme violence. Seemed pointless and pandering to me, but eh, it didn't really bother me either. I certainly won't be rushing out to see more Miike, but I'll try more of his films if they come my way. C+

A Tale of Two Sisters (Kim, 2003) - Absolutely adored this, and I'm not even sure why. Sure, it is one of the most beautiful movies visually I've ever seen, but...

1) It's meant to be a horror film, and I didn't find it scary or creepy whatsoever.

The Adventures of Darwin review self-critique
September 27, 2007

The intro is a ghastly way to begin a review. I sound like a bored teacher droning on and on in a monotone voice about Darwin to my fourth grade students.

"I'd rather have no real attempt at a story rather than sift through acres of awful, pointless text."

This sentence is terribly awkward.

"The environments outside of the village, where you'll spend most of your time, are somewhat more impressive, but I'd wager that a high-quality N64 title could nearly replicate them."

I simply state this as fact without explaining to the reader *why* this is the case. Also, too many qualifiers.

"...and The Adventures of Darwin certainly isn't without its strengths."

A generic, Gamefaqsish transition.
