I rue the day that Microsoft got hold of Rare and made them their exclusive bitch. My big shiny PS3 wants a piece of that action, too.

Before it was Microsoft's bitch, Rare was Nintendo's. And before it was Nintendo's bitch, Rare made a bunch of games that people either ignored (some really good stuff and some really bad) or now love to remember with venom for reasons that elude me (Battletoads).

Maybe we'll get lucky and Microsoft will sell off Rare and the company will get picked up by a multi-platform publisher like THQ or Activision, but I wouldn't count on it. Having a crippled Rare to kick around is a feather in its cap that I can't imagine Microsoft soon relinquishing. But then, I didn't foresee Nintendo selling the company, either! It turned out to be a decent move for Nintendo, all things considered, but I still wish it hadn't happened.

Perhaps it really is a doorway, and if you choose to go inside, you'll find many unexpected things." - Shigeru Miyamoto on secret doors to another world2

Ha ha! You're totally right, and that's the best mini-review of a company I've ever seen.

Still, every once in a while Rare releases that bizarrely glamourous gem and you want to invite them out to dinner for a few months... until they release their next (usually bad) game.

Rare's biggest problem is that they keep delaying games over and over, and when they come out (if they do at all) they seem so dated... and not really worth the wait. Nintendo was right to drop them.

All of Rare's sins would have been forgiven if they had been allowed to go ahead with Goldeneye HD for Xbox Live.
