I see this is one instalment within a "series". I don't want to analyze too much which to pick between this here, or http://www.honestgamers.com/12489/pc/sunless-sea/review.html, it would sort of spoil the choice itself.

Sky or sea? Sea for me. But after checking the developer's website, I'll start from the free-to-play Fallen London.

Can't go wrong with Fallen London. It's the foundation for the lore Seas and Skies are built around.

You can play Skies without playing Seas first, but I'd consider it a mistake. Skies has certainly made a lot of quality of life improvement over Seas over the years, but for stand out moments, Seas has Skies beat. I'd recommend them being played in order, but it's a huge, huge timesink to commit to.
