I played an hour of this (jumped in about 10% into someone else's game), and the review basically confirms most of my own feelings. I thought the controls could and should have been a whole lot tighter, and visually it looked pretty bland, but I did enjoy my brief time spent with the game. Except, I couldn't tell you a lot about it.

Actually, there was one other thing I did remember. A good Metroidvania game in my books compels you to seek out collectibles by yourself. Usually, I like to be rewarded with upgrades, making my character tougher and more badass. I don't know too much about how this Strider works, but I came across a number of artwork and pointless rewards, and that kind of put me off seeking out collectibles by the end of the hour.

Anyway, great review. Seems like overall it's competent but not really worth your time. I don't think I'll ever go back to it.

That's a good point. Helpfully, Hiryu's upgrades are actually shown on the map, which kind of pulled my attention straight to those, whereas I naturally missed a lot of the artwork and such and don't really care that I did.

Thanks for reading! Have you played Guacamelee yet, Ben? If you want a good Metroidvania, that one's absolutely top-of-the-line.

I've not played Guacamelee!, no. But I do own it on two platforms (Vita and Steam), so I really have no excuse! I think I bought it at a time when I had so much other stuff in my immediate backlog. Hopefully, I'll get around to the game at some point.
