I always wondered what happened to Psygnosis. Too bad they were mostly known in their later years as "that development team that made Wipeout games" after being attached to Sony.

Well, it's better than being known as "that development team that made Bram Stoker's Dracula". :-)

I haven't played any of their other games besides Wipeout HD, which was the best racing game I've ever played, hands down.

I have tried numerous Wipeout games and I even downloaded one when Sony was apologizing for the server hacking. I'll play that one someday, maybe, but I'm not in a hurry because all of the past titles that I tried in the series made me want to pull out my hair. I like racing games, including the F-Zero titles, but Wipeout doesn't work for me. It's really a shame that Sony barely let Psygnosis work on anything else once it became Sony Liverpool.

They just seem so devoid of personality compared to Nintendo's stuff, which I had played first and rather extensively. But yes, it's the controls that cinched it for me (along with the AI). I do not like the controls one bit. Or the AI. Or really... anything about Wipeout.

They are bitchin' hard. I can only speak for Wipeout HD, but that game was very fair and well designed. It didn't have the colorful personality of F-Zero GX, but it also didn't have rubber band AI, completely unbalanced vehicles, and snaking. I never lost a race that I didn't deserve to lose, and there was always room for improvement. Once it all clicks, it clicks your face off and rocks your pants.

F-Zero GX is the greatest racing game of that type ever. But WipeOut HD is probably somewhere in the top three.
