First I have to decide whether the game is going to be uniquely good or just a better-graphiced spin off of the originals.

If I do buy it before answering those that question, it'd be based completely on nostalgia. In retrospect, maybe they weren't very good, but I absolutely loved playing through the first two Max Paynes.

I went back a couple years ago to play them again and found that the first one still works and is still such a classic. Damn hard in some spots (that final elevator ride is a ride to hell) but an amazing game all around.

The second game is shockingly weaker. It really begins to drag about half way through and the last couple of levels are surprisingly boring. I love the little nods to Twin Peaks, though.
