Killzone 2 (PS3) - Played this on and off again before Christmas. A serviceable FPS with gorgeous graphics better than anything I've seen on 360 undermined by creative bankruptcy. Also has obscenely slow reticle movement. The boss fight with the ATAC was bullshit and so was the horrible final room before you fight Radec. Halo Reach is a lot better.

Yakuza 3 (PS3) - Fun melee combat, cool side missions, interesting story & characters. Currently in Chapter 6 but on hold while I focus on some Christmas gifts.

God of War 3 (PS3) - I've never been a big fan of the series and pretty much only bought this with my PS3 because it was on sale for Black Friday. My expectations were low since I found GoW2 fairly boring and repetitive but I was pleasantly surprised how fun and epic this installment was. Gorgeous visuals & set pieces & cool scenario design make the game pretty exciting. The combat is still button mashy and shallow compared to games like Devil May Cry & Bayonetta. Worth playing if you happen to own a PS3.

Demon's Souls (PS3) - An early Xmas gift to myself. I beat 1-1 and 2-1 and reached the boss door of 3-1. Need to play this more.

Eternal Sonata (Xbox 360) - I tried playing this some more. Some wizard dude told me to find a key to some musical dungeon or some bullshit and I gave up.

Batman: Arkham City (Xbox 360) - Just finished this yesterday morning and I absolutely loved it. A really great expansion on the groundwork from Arkham Asylum. Plenty of memorable moments, awesome open world environment with plenty to do, cool new gadgets. I couldn't put it down. The Catwoman Episodes I could have done without though - just felt like forgettable tacked on free DLC.

Assassin's Creed: Revelations (Xbox 360) - In the middle of Sequence 4. Ugh, I'm not sure what to think. At first I was really disappointed because this basically plays like a less interesting version of Brotherhood with zip lines & bombs, but as the game has begun to open up and I recruit assassins and earn money, I've begun digging it a lot more. Of course, it's from doing shit that I already did in the last game. I hope the story missions start improving so the game doesn't start feeling like Assassin's Creed 2011.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii) - Tons of fun. Got every character unlocked and trying to get the last couple of levels now.

Skyrim (Xbox 360) - Tried it out a little and decided to hold off jumping in until Revelations is finished.

You're not missing much with Eternal Sonata. There are better JRPGs out, like Lost Odyssey.

Demon's Souls was pretty tough. Mostly it was knowing how to craft a character. I had to start over a few times because of that, and eventually owned everything with a DEX build character.

The most important stat in my mind is STA, both in Demon's Souls and Dark Souls. You can beef up your VIT all you like, but you'll still die instantly to a lot of foes if they slam through your shield (or even if you block a first blow and then stand around like a dazed fool). Every stat is precious in those games, but STA trumps all. I noticed also that while DEX was important in Demon's Souls, particularly for reducing damage taken from falls, it's not especially useful in Dark Souls. STR is more useful, since that game is designed to encourage melee players. You'll have a hard time doing better than a pyromancer with good STA and STR.

Right now, I'm playing "Wild Arms" on my PSP until my back recovers. (Strained it over the holiday.) Always a pleasure to revisit this classic. Never understood what the heck was up with Zed.

I've been playing Defense Grid: The Awakening for no good reason over the past few days (aside from the fact that it's very good and addictive), but I beat it yesterday. I'll geek around a bit more with the extra modes before I review it, most likely, but I will be reviewing it.

As far as other games, I need to get back to Skyward Sword and I'd like to finally start Skylanders and burn through Atelier Totori. That's pretty much all that's on my plate to play unless I get more freelance work (which I had better do soon).

I've been revisting the old Capcom beat 'em ups- trying to see how far I can get without continuing.

Captain Commando: I don't doubt that Final Fight was a tough act to follow, but this was still kind of a letdown. There's not much in the way of a coherent theme, the characters all feel identical to one another, and all the enemies take way too much damage. Or perhaps I'm just bitter because- even after several days of practice- Shtrom Jr. still shuts me down every time I get to the end of the second level.

Final Fight: I can usually get through the first stage- sometimes without losing a life!- but that's about it. The finer points of crowd control continue to elude me.

Cadillacs & Dinosaurs: I'm at a complete loss as to how to deal with the boss of stage four.

White Knight Chronicles- Started this a few days ago having completed Folklore. It's a true blue JRPG that has fun moments despite a somewhat blah story. Currently hunting a fire lizard so I can complete some goddess statue.

Eternal Eyes- I'm giving this one a second chance, possibly starting tonight. If it fails to impress me (as it had the first time I played through it), then onto the sell pile it goes.

Tales of Phantasia (GBA)- I'll get back to it eventually. Don't remember where I am.

Genj, your thoughts on Killzone 2 pretty much mirror mine exactly.

I've been playing the Xbox 360 port of the original Crysis, and I'm having a great time with it for the same reasons I had a great time with Crysis 2, with the Far Cry-ish open jungle environments being a huge improvement over the second game's far more linear city levels. I am kind of dreading the part when this game apparently turns crap halfway through. The port also took some visual hits making its way to consoles, presumably, as that would explain why the draw distance is so poor, and why there's no anti-aliasing.'

Still haven't made any more progress with Skyward Sword. Don't really have much desire to keep playing it.

STA is very important in Demon's Souls, and it was a major emphasis along with DEX in my character. I mainly beefed up DEX because I planned on using bows and "sharp" weapons. I was lucky enough to get my hands on a Pure Bladestone (took days of farming just to get one), and used it to create a Sharp Uchigatana+5. After obtaining that and doing a decent amount of leveling up (using level 4-2 as my stomping grounds), most enemies took 1-3 shots to kill. Of course, you can get the same results with a variety of different characters. There's even a build that involves super-boosting luck.

I always looked at Zed as the wacky schizo guy who just tags along with whoever will support his dreams of being....I guess, good at something. Which led him from the evil Metal Demons to the less evil blind-girl-trapped-in-monster-infested-town.

But no matter who is sponsoring him, you still kick his ass. He just fights harder for the blind girl. Which is, I guess, how you know he's not really evil...more like if you gave a random hobo the ability to fight and then dumped him into a new world.

Wizardry III (NES): I've mapped my way up to level 5 and 4, but I haven't finished either. I'm playing with 2 parties (good and evil) rather than trying to change alignment. I'm not liking the frequent doors-with-encounters-on-the-other-side thing going on...

Icewind Dale II: Not through the beginning yet. I've never finished this game, not because it's bad but because I can't stand spending so much time in front of a computer.

Donkey Kong Country (SNES): I'm in some sort of tree-house jungle thing.

Shadowgate (NES): I found a key under the carpet shortly after the Cyclopes and that's as far as I've gotten. I feel like I'm supposed to feed something to the dog in the laboratory or something.

Demon's Soul: On NG++++ and I'm starting to get bored.

Metal Max 2 Reloaded on the DS. Awesome fun with tanks, dogs and a post-apocalyptic world. Got 7 tanks (2 of them motorbikes) 2 dogs, and killed 9 Wanted outlaws. Onwards into the wastelands!

That's a "beloved" Wizardry staple there. Which they were still doing as of the "gold" version of VII. A game which I will never review because I'd have to play it again to do so and I refuse to subject myself to that. Not that it's horrible, but just really difficult and frustrating at times. And by "at times" I mean, virtually the entire game.

I'm using a magic build in Demon's Souls with a Crescent Falchion. I seem to be doing well because I haven't died that often.

I finished Assassin's Creed: Revelations last night. It's entirely a rehash of Brotherhood, but despite that I had fun with it. There were some really great moments during the missions where you're looking for the Masyaf keys (the one where you're chasing after the Templars in the boat comes to mind). On the other hand, the stealth mechanics are REALLY showing their age during the few "get caught and fail" missions. I know the whole "hiding in the open" thing was big for this series, but I really hope Assassin's Creed III will let you duck or take cover behind walls. The targeting system is still inconsistent too. Barely any progress in Desmond's story as well. Pretty skippable game.

I never finished Wiz7. While I enjoy old RPGs, I've always found them hard to play because I hate sitting at a computer, especially when the game has no music or anything. NES ports of Wizardry 1-3 and Pool of Radiance are among my favourite games though. Mapping can be fun, if you're in the right mood (e.g. there is beer in the house).

The Cresant Falchion loses its usefulness later. The Kris blade pays dividends for magic users once you power it up, especially in NG+'s. I've realized that the only way to succeed in Demon's Soul is to overspecialize and exploit the crap out of your specialty.

Splatterhouse 3: Just 1CC'ed this one. Up until a couple of years ago, it was generally agreed that the series went out on a high note here, but I'm just not seeing it. The combat is shallow, the levels are dull, the enemies lack variety, there's no real set pieces, and the attempts- via cutscenes- to inject a serious story into the game just seem misguided.

I've pretty much only been playing Arkham City since I got it and I agree with your estimation of it. One of the best games I've ever played. I'm not sure that it will have much replay value, but there's so much to do and all of it is so genuinely fun that I'm not sure I care. I'm actually interested in getting 100% on the game and that's something I've never been bothered to attempt in other games.

Interesting note on the Catwoman chapters. I guess they are a bit weak, but then again... they aren't really the point of the game but are exactly what you said: tacked on DLC. And for that, they do well I think! I do like using her unique abilities to get riddler trophies and I enjoy the choice you're given halfway (or more?) through the game, though I don't know if it affects anything.

I started Skyrim this weekend and put 14 hours into it. It's kinda hard not to end up playing for 3-4 hours at a time. I used a lot of different magic skills in Oblivion, so I went with a one-handed, block, and heavy armor build this time. I'm actually kicking a lot of ass with it, though dragons get kinda annoying when they don't want to land on the ground. This time I'm trying to move through the main story at a decent pace since during Oblivion I did side quests & guilds for 40+ hours, got completely sick of the game, and then rushed through the main quest. I've already run into technical problems: 3 crashes (2 during loading screens, one lock up while walking in an empty field) and 1 time my one handed skill was lowered from 58 to 20 despite 100% resistance to diseases from Beast Blood. This is easily one of the best games of 2011, but honestly I think I kinda liked Human Revolution a little better so far.

This, so much.

By the way, I figured out an easy way to boost Block: giants. Stand in front of one and just guard its attacks and your Block skill goes up at an absurd rate (i.e. you'll level up every three or four hits for a while).

Also, if you're getting into Heavy Armor, then you should probably work on Smithing as well. The nice thing about Smithing is that you get the same amount of experience points for everything you craft, so you can literally just buy as many leather straps and iron ingot as you can find, make dozens of iron daggers, and boost your skill that way. If you decide to do that, go for the Daedric armor perk (which is better than dragon scale despite having a lower level requirement). You need Daedra hearts to make the armor, but you can buy two of them from that shady dark elf at the College of Winterhold, and he restocks every 48 hours.

Oh, as for my own gaming progress, I spent the weekend playing X-Men: Destiny for some reason. You could probably beat the game in less than four hours but I got some extra value going 100% for achievements. Nevertheless, it's a pretty terrible game. Review to come shortly, hopefully.

Gears of War 3 - Couldn't stand Gears 3 in single-player (horribly contrived writing) but got in on some Ranked matches and it's still Gears. Maybe I'm just less impressed with the sp from a year with Dead Space and Uncharted; better all-around games for sure but they're no match in multiplayer.
