Growl is such an absurd game. I wrote rather extensively about it in my Taito compilation review for PlayStation 2, if you're interested.

Anyway, I thought you nailed this pretty well, though the version included on the PS2 must have been dumbed down or something. In any event, playing through this game will leave a person wondering how such a project was ever released. I'm not sure if it was stupid on purpose or if the developers were simply that clueless.

Perhaps it really is a doorway, and if you choose to go inside, you'll find many unexpected things." - Shigeru Miyamoto on secret doors to another world2

From the review:
Don’t be afraid to throw a few quarters into Growl, but leave on your own terms. ... This is a game where you need to know when to fold ‘em else you'll end up broke.

I'll only play Growl for the music that plays during the first stage. Beyond that, I don't have any reason to proceed beyond the first boss.

I notice that sometimes you bold the name Growl and sometimes you italicize it. Is there a reasoning behind this, or did I spot a style inconsistency?

I usually bold the game title the first and last time I use it, italicize it in between.

It's more a personal thing -- I don't see any editor ever okaying it, it won't fly in formal writing -- and probably pretty dumb. I get that. But I like to try and have the game name jump out at the reader's attention straight from the get-go and right before they leave, just so there's a slightly better chance it sticks.

As goofy as it seems, I think the emphasis sort of works too.
