Super Mario 64 is an okay game, but for 3D platforming I definitely prefer Super Mario Galaxy and Sly Cooper (the first one). Those were both games that had more polish and were simply more fun for me.

With Super Mario 64, which I played back when it was new, the wonder was just seeing Mario in three dimensions. Once that wore out, I was grappling with a camera I hated, bland visuals and often irritating play control. It was still a masterful work at its time, but has definitely been exceeded.

With that said, it still isn't ugly to look at. Despite having 'better' graphics, Banjo-Kazooie has an inferior visual style (I feel) to Super Mario 64.

"What if everything you see is more than what you see--the person next to you is a warrior and the space that appears empty is a secret door to another world? What if something appears that shouldn't? You either dismiss it, or you accept that there is much more to the world than you think. Perhaps it really is a doorway, and if you choose to go inside, you'll find many unexpected things." - Shigeru Miyamoto on secret doors to another world2

SM64's camera was weird. You could rotate it with the C buttons, but every once in a while, if you tried to move it any further, it would cancel out on you. Occasionally, the camera would go anywhere except where I wanted it to go. For the most part the camera system was function, but it wasn't perfect.
