Cool review.

Re: the game's intro, I guess if the same dumb happenings were rendered in the manner of the intro to an 80's coin-op, which Rygar originally was - and for dumbness, his cry of 'Let's fight!' is one of my favourite video game dumb things of all time - they would work fine. That's not an excuse, just a thought.

I'm glad that you enjoyed the review, bloomer. As for the suggestion about the beginning of the story, I think there's some truth to that... but in this case the story couldn't even have been redeemed by that. Early games of that era that come to mind for me are stuff like Ghosts 'n Goblins--which handled the princess in peril thing simply and effectively--and Astyanax, which was much more complex but still revolved around saving a princess and still was narratively sound.

Rygar: The Battle of Argus, if dumbed down to sprites and such, still wouldn't work because the dialog is that bad and the opening plot is that unbelievable. The issue seems to be that Tecmo tried to add complexity to the plot, but didn't go all the way. It's like dumping extra ingredients into a recipe right at the end and forgetting to stir. Whoever gets that mouthful is going to be pretty disgusted. In this case, everyone who plays Rygar: The Battle of Argus gets that mouthful.

Perhaps it really is a doorway, and if you choose to go inside, you'll find many unexpected things." - Shigeru Miyamoto on secret doors to another world2
