Another way to get extra lives.
Aside from collecting 1-up Mushrooms or 3-up Moons, you can kill eight enemies in a row to gain an extra life. There are several ways of doing this; you can fire a shell at a line of eight enemies, or run into multiple enemies while holding an Invincibility Star. This can also be done by jumping on enemies' heads, but you cannot land on the ground in between each hit.

New color palette and enemies
To change the game's color palette and see new enemies (for instance, the red piranha plants will now be hungry jack-o-lanterns), complete all the levels of the Star Road.

Re-enter fortresses and castles
Ever noticed that you can't go back and enter castles and fortresses you've already beaten? Yes you can! Walk up to them on the map and press L and R simultaneously.

Return to Main Menu
Running low on lives? If you are on a level you have already defeated, and about to fall down a bottomless pit, just press start then select to bring you back to the main menu.
