Probably, and this is just a guess mind you, because the idea has been done so much by now that it's no longer exciting.

That's not a very good guess, Zipp, because it relies on the assumption that once an idea has been done a few times it's no longer worth doing. Nothing could be further from the truth. The problem with this game isn't that it has been done too often (it really hasn't, particularly not recently), but that in this case the gameplay design is such that playing the game will not provide the excitement that players may have experienced in the past when playing similar games with more intelligent design.

I've only just started the campaign, but at the moment it feels like it's trying too hard to manufacture an epic, dramatic feel with all the cut-scenes and set pieces. It feels a bit gimmicky and disjointed. I think I'll beat it as soon as possible and then return to Reach.

They should create a shooting game where you command a squad of walruses. It could be called "Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Bucket Recon." Now that's something no developer's ever done before. 8-)

Well, hold on now... my guess has been treated like I'm making a blanket statement about the development of games. All I'm saying is that Blood Omen might be bored with playing the same kind of games and might want to try something different.

I see where this might have gotten confused, but I am not trying to get into yet another discussion of how games should and shouldn't be made, complete with snarky comments from the usual peanut gallery, (who haven't shown up yet, thank god).

I do like this sentiment, though. It holds true for a lot of games, I feel.

I'm enjoying Black Ops, but I'm also pretty new to the current gen of consoles and games. I haven't played MW 1 or 2, or any current gen FPS aside from Halo 3 (and it's been three years since I played that).

I enjoyed the campaign, but maybe that's because I don't play many FPS games (and those that I do play are usually a bit different, like Left 4 Dead or Far Cry 2). Or it could be that I just like the direction this campaign takes, and Treyarch's evident determination to something other than just ape Modern Warfare 2.

I agree with Zipp, Jason. It does give off that 'done to death' feel. I'm bored already in chapter three. The prison level was mildly entertaining, but that's about it. And just as was noted in several pro reviews, there are checkpoints where you aren't told what you should be doing, or where you should be going, and the answer that reveals itself through your trial and error is seldom intuitive.

Multiplayer is only passable for the most part--but the NUKETOWN map that everyone is playing to death is fucking bonkers. And it's so great that you can vote for it over and over--which is what most people do. I've hit up that map like ten times in a row for some seriously frenetic team deathmatch chaos.

Actually, I've heard good things about Blood Stone.

Part of my advice comes from the fact that I haven't been too enamored with the FPS genre lately. I am looking forward to Deus Ex: Human Revolution, but I'm not sure what I would recommend playing right now.

Left 4 Dead 2 is awesome. Have you tried that?

Remove 'the' from that sentence. Seriously, my friends and I find the love for Nuketown baffling. It's just carnage, and since there are only about three spawn points (and the game often spawns opposing teams right on top of each other) any match on Nuketown is just a chaotic shambles of spawn-killing and instant death. Yuck. And yet people vote for it all the time (the other night we left a lobby after being forced to play on Nuketown four times in a row). I love the aesthetic, but the size and layout are horrible.

Rant over...for now.

Carnage is what deathmatch is all about. It's like Modern Warfare meets Unreal Tournament. I prefer it to the alternative, which I have experienced on some maps: running around for minutes at a time without encountering an enemy to frag.

Yeah, I've pretty much played nothing but Free-For-All since I got the game, and some of the maps (Array, Crisis, etc.) are just way too big for eight-player deathmatch. They do need to fix Nuketown's spawns, though, which are out of control.

To most people's surprise, my favorite Black Ops map is Jungle.

Really, eh? I think I'll try getting into Jungle tonight. Cuz I've already played the hell out of Nuketown. Yes, already.

Sadly, I've abandoned the single player campaign. I've chosen to get my single player fix from Buster Bros. instead.

What's your user name on steam, b-omen? We should try to get a game going if you've got holiday coming up.

Which reminds me, do you go as Suskie on Steam, suskie?

My steam is ZippDementia.

Susquatch, actually. Although I haven't been on Steam for a while since I've spent the last couple of months with console games. First Reach, then Black Ops, and I've just now picked up my copy of Brotherhood.

I don't have Black Ops, but my favourite modes in previous Call of Duties were always objective. The whole "killing for the sake of killing" gets a bit stale for me.

Agreed. Although the mode I tend to do best at is Free For All, I tend to favoure Domination/Demolition (which is probably one of many reasons I generally prefer Battlefield to Call of Duty).
