i would love to write reviews for HG but the newspaper that i write for doesnt allow me to double post.....plus i got a regular 9-5 job so unfortunately i can only take out time for 1 column and i wont lie since the newspaper pays me like USD $12 per my regular review and $30 for my special articles (i converted my currency in US dollars) my loyalty lies a bit more with the newspapers

Then to be frank, if all you're going to do is spam links on the forums I don't think you have a place here. HG is not free advertisement for your 9-5 job. You don't see me linking to the webpages I work for, do you?

Three notes:

1) There's no requirement for users to submit reviews here. Ideally, we would have a ton of writers visiting -- even if they're contractually unable to cross-post, their presence can be a great thing.

2) Blogs are a great place for contributors -- past or present -- to show off what you're doing elsewhere. And blood-omen has contributed several reviews in the past, so I think we should be happy that he's now getting paid money.

3) BUUUUUUTTTTTT if you're doing that, especially if you're doing it frequently or simply posting a link (as in this topic), please uncheck that little box. We'd like to keep the main forums free of spam.

I'm letting this topic remain as a message to all, but future ones will be deleted or edited (to uncheck that box, if possible) if they seem too spammy.

I read the review and I'm going to comment!

The Good: it's a nice little advertisement for Starcraft with no glaring grammatical errors. It gives a great overview of Starcraft, especially for someone who has never played it before, and I like your point that it's a good game for the first time RTSer.

The Bad: It's a good overview of the game, but it doesn't really do much reviewing. It pretty much tells somebody what they could also learn by going to a wiki page. I generally like to get a little bit more in depth information from a review.

@zippd......yes u have pointed out the same thing before also but somehow i am unable to change my style.....can you please give me some tips?????

Well, you don't want to lose your overall style, but you want to add a little more personality into the mix. We write very differently, so it's hard to say exactly what should be added in. I can't give you a five-step program to Zippy success, but maybe try the following big step.

1) Can I find this in the instruction manual or on Wiki? What is UNIQUE about my review?

Not that every statement in your review has to be unique or something that's not on wiki, but when you read the entire review you should ask yourself why someone would reference your review.

See, when you write a review, you are essentially creating a product with your name on it. What you really want is for people to read your review and then share the link around. For them to do this, there has to be something unique about your review. This is one basic tenant of journalism.

For some, it's style. Some reviewers, especially here, just have a style that you won't find anywhere else.

For others, it's the choice of game. Some reviewers, like Aschultz, stick primarily to very old games. You aren't going to find many reviews of Robot Odyssey on the web.

For some reviews, it's that they tell a good story. Maybe these reviews don't give much of an overview of the Starcraft background but when you're done reading it, you feel like you've just been playing the game.

Some reviewers are simply very provocative. You can't finish one of their reviews without feeling like you need to own the game at once or, adversely, like it should never have been made.

Any one of these would be a good reason for someone to read your review and say to someone else that they should check it out. Right now, your reviews are solid, but they lack that hook that separates them from other reviews out there. Just try and think about things that you could do to make your reviews stand out.

I personally would say, focus less attention on how the game works and what it is mechanically, and more on your own experiences with it. I know that's something I had difficulty with in the past, and still do now and again.

Also, I'm sorry if I was unnecessarily harsh earlier. I get a little frustrated when...well let's not get into that.

One pretty easy way to change your style is to ask yourself what you like about the game and why you like that particular aspect of the game.

Wanna know one thing I like about Starcraft? I like how the Zerg so perfectly capture the essence of purposeless slaughter more fearsomely than any of the fictitious alien races that inspired them in the first place. That's something I would include in a review of Starcraft if I ever wrote one, and it's the difference between mere information and actual reviewing.
