Title: Recommend me a cheap, non-shitty game for XBOX 360
Posted: October 28, 2009 (05:14 PM)
I'm going home for the weekend so I'll finally have access to my 360 again. Before leaving for school I wasn't really playing anything so I thought I'd hit up Gamestop or Best Buy for some cheap games to play through in a weekend. Anything short and under $20 (new or used) would be nice.

I've already played:
both Gears, Fallout 3, GTA4, DMC4, Dead Space, RE5, Fable 2, Prince of Persia, Left 4 Dead, Bioshock, Bullet Witch, Earth Defense Force

Was considering:

Silent Hill: Homecoming
Ass. Creed
Dark Sector
The Darkness
Dead Rising
FEAR
Mirror's Edge

feel free to tell me if these are in fact not non-shitty 360 games

Title: Sometimes I really hate computer generated effects in movies.
Posted: October 24, 2009 (07:17 PM)
I was watching the unrated director's cut of Sam Raimi's Drag Me to Hell (simple but very effective and enjoyable horror film btw), and I just couldn't help but smirk at one instance of very fake looking CG. At one point the film's protagonist Christine drops an anvil on an apparition causing its eyeballs to pop out and splatter onto Christine's face. It looks pretty fake:

I've seen Troma films use tradition make-up and effects capture more realistic looking splatter. CG in film is best when it's difficult to tell it's CG or generally isn't set against or interacting with live actors or real objects. One good use that comes to mind is in Pan's Labyrinth when the villainous Captain Vidal smashes the farmer's face in with a bottle. The cut is so quick and the shot is so dark that you don't really notice it's done with computer. I know that the movie isn't real, but I feel like when I see a really fake looking effect it just breaks the atmosphere of the film. I'm pulled away from it momentarily and back to reality. It just kinda annoys me considering these CG effects generally cost more to make.

Don't even get me started on the parts of The Matrix Reloaded that look like an Xbox game.

Title: Movies I have recently seen.
Posted: October 02, 2009 (08:36 PM)

Twilight

This movie is about a really clumsy girl who falls in love with a really sparkly vampire. Let's get straight to the point: the acting fucking blows. I don't know why a high-profile big budget film like this has such wooden acting. I suppose one possible explanation is the poor script and dialogue they had to work with. Luckily Twilight is not a total bore. Visually it looks fantastic (loved how everything looks very dark and pale in general), and it's just so cheesy and silly at times that it becomes unintentionally funny. I mean, I don't know how anyone can't enjoy fucking VAMPIRE BASEBALL or Edward Cullen's sexy photoshopped sparkles. And holy shit so many hilarious scenes of "Edward climbs trees" or "Edward runs fast" or "Edward can fly through the air wheeeeee." I will say I applaud the filmmakers in trying to fix the biggest problem with Meyer's novel: the lack of conflict for 90% of the story. This is done by abbreviating Edward & Bella's blossoming courtship and adding a lot more scenes for the "bad vampires" as they prey on various victims. Frankly this is the dullest of the books so New Moon may actually be cool in a schlocky 'werewolves on motorcycles' kind of way! Score: unscorable!

Let the Right One In

This is that other vampire movie from 2008. It's a lot better. In fact I'd say it's the best movie I've seen since Inglourious Basterds, though that's probably not very impressive since I saw it a month and a half ago. The film is about a lonely boy named Oskar who comes to befriend a strange girl named Eli. She seems to smelly funny and some recent murders coincide with her recent arrival! Wonderful story and characters all around. It's slow paced but you don't even notice because you'll become very involved in the story. I found myself even feeling empathy for the vampire. The movie has one big problem and that's its vagueness to some of the story's plot points. I think the studio tried to tiptoe around some of the more creepy parts (mainly the pedophilia and castration bits from the book - really want to read the book now). See it before there's an American remake to compare it to! Score: 9/10

Eraserhead

Strange film. Score: 7/10

Watchmen

This movie is enjoyable to watch, but not amazing. It feels way too long at 2 hours at 43 minutes. I just don't think the graphic novel really translated well to film. The acting is decent but sometimes it felt cheesy (especially Rorschach). There were a few other things that nagged at me: the overuse of slow-motion, the fake-looking CG used in a couple violent scenes, the lack of squid aliens (seriously, they actually stayed pretty true to the source material and then completely change the ending?). I'd probably buy it when it's pretty inexpensive. Score: 6/10

Sick Nurses/Cinderella

I lumped these together because they're both generic Asian horror films. Sick Nurses is a wholly unoriginal film in which a group of sexy Thai nurses are haunted by the vengeful Ringu-esque spirit of a nurse they murdered. The deaths are all generic, predictable or uninteresting with the exception of an overeating, bulimic woman who chokes on a dead fetus. Cinderella is a bizarre Korean horror film in which girls who get plastic surgery are haunted by a Ringu-style ghost and end up killing themselves. There's also a weird plot about a supposedly dead sister living in a block of ice. The film is very slow paced and confusing. Cinderella at least has the benefit of randomly having NY State of Mind by Nas in the middle of it (hahaha what is going on here). If you want an Asian horror film you've likely not been recommended for the umpteeth time, check out A Tale of Two Sisters instead. Score: Sick Nurses 3/10, Cinderella: 4/10

Title: Oh no a Netflix topic.
Posted: September 20, 2009 (01:47 PM)
There are plenty of movies, good or bad, that I'd love to watch and likely never touch again. I was considering trying Netflix. I've heard some bad things in the past namely getting titles lower on your queue, new releases being impossible to rent, and people receiving scratched discs. Still, $9-14 a month doesn't seem so bad.

Does anyone have anything good or bad to say about it? Anything better they'd recommend (a friend recommended redbox but the closest one is too far)? How fast/consistent is getting your next DVD?

Title: one of the worst I've ever
Posted: September 19, 2009 (02:15 PM)

The worst TV show I've ever seen: The Real Housewives of New Jersey.

Over the summer I was flipping channels and I stumbled upon this garbage. The whole show seems to be a bunch of angry middle-aged women from New Jersey acting bitchy. Has reality TV really come to the point where they solely put a camera on the worst excuses for people from American society and call it a show? Arguably that's what they've always done but there at least used to be some sort of over-arching premise, right?

The worst movie I've ever seen: Cool World

If you've ever seen any of Ralph Bakshi's other more creepy, bizarre, sexual, and/or violent animated feature films, you'd realize the ridiculous degree of studio interference that went into this film. It was originally pitched as the 'first animated horror film' but somehow was morphed into a tepid 'edgy version of Who Frame Roger Rabbit' with a man having sex with a cartoon character as a major plot element. Contains a young Brad Pitt!

The worst album I've ever listened to: Soulja Boy - Souljaboytellem.com

Yes, I have actually listened to this album in its entirety. It boggles my mind how this kid could actually earn money from his music while having fans that take his work seriously. Sure novelty acts like William Hung or Wesley Willis had less talent, but people liked them because of how awful their music was. Soulja Boy's beats are so cheap and simple and his songs are always repetitive with horrible lyrics. Just listen to such classics as Booty Meat or I Got Me Some BAPES.

The worst anime I've ever seen: Moetan

Oh god it has the word MOE right in the title. A mind-numbingly boring show with a weak plot about a magical duck and some hot guy flunking English. Maybe that's because it's an anime adaptation of English study aides (!!!). It's basically an excuse for lots of butt-shots of a high school girl who looks 5 years old. The rest of the cast is drawn normally. Ecchi bullshit.

The worst place I've eaten: Taco Bell

I have a friend who fucking loves Taco Bell. I don't know how he can eat this garbage. Their food is just so disgusting and slimy and doesn't taste like Mexican should. Wendy's is probably the only fast food I've ever enjoyed.

Title: I have been listening to popular music from when I was in elementary/junior high school today.
Posted: September 06, 2009 (04:01 PM)
In some ways some of this music is incredibly embarrassing. In other ways it's a bit scary how it's not as "omg vomit all over the floor blargh" as some modern pop music like Lady Gaga.

blink-182 - Adam's Song - This was blink's serious song. It's about a kid who killed himself or something. It's basically catchy pop punk but without the silly theatrics of modern day "emo" like My Chemical Romance. Even though I despise this stuff, I will say I wish mainstream pop-punk was more like this than its current "guyliner" incarnation. 4/10

Sisqo - Thong Song - This was the shit back in 7th grade! I still remember us kids all talking about those hot babes in thongs in the music video (I don't believe the Internet was as widespread yet). I admit that the string samples are still pretty badass, but the vocals and lyrics are embarrassing. SHE'S GOT DUMPS LIKE A TRUCK. 3/10

Eminem - The Real Slim Shady - I remember seeing this on MTV (back when they showed videos). I thought the video was funny but hated the song. Eminem isn't a good rapper as far as I'm considered. Never liked his lyrics or his voice. Dr. Dre's beats are pretty good here, but I can't get past the dated Tom Green reference. I do remember that like everyone at my school bought The Marshall Mathers LP. Probably because it was rap that white people could like without feeling as "funny." 4/10

Kid Rock - Bawitdaba - Haha did this song always have "nu-metal" guitars in it? I could only remember the terrible white dude rapping. 1/10

Jay-Z - Big Pumpin' (feat. UGK) - Probably the only song of this batch that held up over the years. This is pretty much a "boasting about my money and bitches" mainstream rap track, but it's from before Jay-Z became utter garbage, it has UGK providing most of the verses, and a really awesome Timbaland beat. Probably my favorite thing from Jay-Z besides Girls, Girls, Girls. 7/10

TLC - No Scrubs - Decent pop music for girls. 5/10

Linkin Park - Numb - In junior high our hormones were wild and we were all full of angst (no one was emo yet except for hardcore punk bands in DC). Numb expressed our angst that our silly parents just didn't understand because they were like old and controlling and stuff. Oh and it had lots of "heaviness" that us kids liked. Now a favorite of Naruto & DBZ AMVs. When I was younger I thought the girl in the video was hot. Man, what was wrong with me? She's not even Asian! 3/10

Tool - Stinkfist - Tool is a very deep and meaningful band. All their lyrics are very deep and meaningful. Man, I love Tool, but those skit things are just too fucking weird. Whatever, this band is very experimental and deep. This song, which is a reference to fisting, is very deep. P.S. - Very good metal for those that want to avoid things like "heaviness." 5/10

Insane Clown Posse - Halls of Illusion - JUGGALOS WOOP WOOP 0/10

Title: The new Porcupine Tree album.
Posted: September 01, 2009 (08:38 PM)
I'll spare you the joke about it being called The Incident. The same alternative rock mislabeled progressive rock that Steven Wilson has been doing since In Absentia. It sounds like Deadwing extended to 90 minutes basically. It actually feels like a backstep after Fear of a Blank Planet, which although was hilariously bad lyrically contains probably the bands' best instrumentation. This album feels rehashed and recycled, but will probably be better than the train wreck that The Resistance is shaping up to be. My two gay prog brothers agree as well: this album blows. 4/10
