So I got through Bard's Tale III a couple weeks ago, and stupid things like work and reading got in the way of Silver Blades. I think I got through a fight a couple years ago and shelved the effort. Repeat performance 2 wks ago. Now I want to map out the first few areas tonight.

Maybe I'm still exhausted from BT3. I'm really happy about the maps I wrote. I need to send in minor corrections, but I just can't be bothered. On the other hand, I had a lot of fun working out how to win certain fights.

Basically BT3 forces you to win certain fights by either 1) having a sick-good party from BT2(or one cheated up with a trick) or 2) finding the right spells to defeat enemies guarding an important item. It makes combat strategy more important. There's also the matter of getting sick of levelling up and trying to sneak a quick win against the first enemy--which nets archmage status and 375 HP/350 spell points.

I'd always wanted to play the game straight-up and got stuck in spots this time around, but 17 years after I originally solved it, I realized how differently I thought about things, how I was able to sit back and look for shortcuts, experiment about other aspects of the game, etc. I also spent more time on the later worlds, where fights consisted of

1) run from level drainers
2) cast the super blaster spell DIVA
3) rout the enemy hand to hand now that you're 4x more likely to hit with 4x the damage
4) cast NUKE for fun if they're stubborn

At the end there are a bunch of fights in a row but I was able to navigate them with several cute tricks I wasn't sure how I missed when younger. Back then I think all my guys had 1000+ HP and were unhittable. Here they had half that.

Of course having save states and hex editors and easy access to the copy protection code wheel didn't hurt.

Or maybe I'm just too absorbed in the sardonic nihilism of Charles Bukowski. He has lots of fun, short books. I recommend Post Office, Factotum and Ham on Rye. Books like these helped me face work enough to really get stuff done last week.
