Corpse Party Scaring Up PSN Later This Month

Fans of horror have probably had Corpse Party on their radar since its announcement. XSEED's ghoulish adventure game is a download-only title soon to make its appearance on PSN. However, for quite some time, excited gamers have only had “Fall” as the estimated time of arrival. That's finally been narrowed down, and we now know that the game should be hitting PSN this month.

Corpse Party is a mixture of visual novel and adventure game, presented with SNES-era graphics during gameplay and gruesome, horrifyingly detailed art during the game's more traumatic moments. Best played with headphones, the game uses directional sound to create a 3D soundscape, amping up the fear as players push their way forward.

Most modern horror games are akin to American zombie flicks. There is a threat, but it's stupid and easily dealt with. Easy to deal with for something trying to kill you, at least. Corpse Party is on the other end of the horror spectrum.

“You can run, but you can’t not die. You have no weapons. Your foes are immortal. All you can do is struggle in vain to survive, and pray that each door you open – each corridor you traverse – isn’t your last,” says XSEED localization specialist Tom Lipschultz. Hearing that, it's not hard to see why Corpse Party has a cult following in Japan, and horror enthusiasts in the US owe it to themselves to keep their eye on it.

Of course, with Halloween behind us, it may seem a perfect date for the game's release was missed. Lipschultz agrees, but he has an excuse. “We’re sorry to have missed Halloween, but we wanted to make certain everything was perfect before unleashing this demon upon the English-speaking world.” A shame to miss such a fitting date, but it's all to provide a better experience for the player.
