DmC runs at 30 fps on consoles, but Capcom says it feels like 60
Ninja Theory's upcoming take on the Devil May Cry franchise, January's DmC, will run at 30 frames per second, but it'll "feel" like 60 frames per second, according to the game's director, Hideaki Itsuno.
Speaking to Eurogamer, Itsuno said fans shouldn't worry about the frame rate not reaching 60 fps.
"60 frames per second is a speed the brain and the eye can catch up with and understand,” he said. “But at 30 frames per second there's a technique where you take advantage of the brain's ability to fill in the blanks."
“So even though you have it running at 30 frames per second, you create the motions and the poses in such a way that the brain will naturally fill in what would have been the extra frames."
The PC version of the game, however, will indeed run at 60 fps, just like previous entries in the series -- though to play the PC version, fans may have a wait a bit longer. But you wouldn't want that anyway, right? It's bad for your eyes, according to Itsuno: It gets your eyes tired, because the frames almost "shake or flash," making a frame rate downgrade necessary.
And thanks to the Unreal Engine, Itsuno said the team has been able to implement some control techniques that will emulate 60 fps responsiveness.
Surely, we'll find out if Itsuno is right later this month when DmC's demo launches for consoles. The game itself is due on shelves for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on Jan. 15.
