Phantasy Star Online 2 to be free to play, mobile version announced
The monthly fee for an MMORPG like World of Warcraft can be a big barrier of entry for some people. Not everyone wants to pay for a game and then keep paying a fee every month to be able to keep playing it.
Phantasy Star Online 2 is using a different model. Sega announced today that their hotly anticipated sequel to Phantasy Star Online will be free to download and play. As is the standard for that model, certain optional items will only be available for real world money. (Gotta make money somehow.)
Some people prefer to just have access to everything in the game for a monthly fee, so whether this is good or bad news depends largely on your own preferences. One thing's for sure: Any game that's free to download and play will be much easier to "import" during the time between the Japanese release any any hypothetical English release that may or may not happen in the future.
Sega also announced a smartphone version of the game. While the Android and iOS version won't support crossplay with the Vita and PC versions, they will share data with them. It will be a special mobile version complete with social game elements.
The PC version is due out in Japan in early summer, with the mobile version planned for a winter release and the Vita version coming in the Spring of next year.
