Game Gear games added to 3DS Virtual Console
Today North American 3DS owners will find some new content if they load up the eShop. Sega's Game Gear has been added to the lineup of supported systems on the 3DS Virtual Console.
The three debut games are Dragon Crystal, Shinobi, and Sonic the Hedgehog: Triple Trouble, which are priced at $2.99, $3.99, and $4.99 respectively. All three are Game Gear entries in franchises made popular on the Sega Genesis. (Dragon Crystal is a pseudo-sequel to Fatal Labyrinth.)
While Game Boy and NES games use a similar emulator, the Game Gear emulator has a surprising number of new features, as well as a different look. There are three different screen modes: normal, full, and dot by dot, which displays the game at its original resolution. Unlike Game Boy games, the resolution is changed from the Virtual Console menu, not by holding start or select at startup, which means it can be changed at any time. A Game Gear screen border is used in dot by dot mode, with an option to change its colour from black to red, blue, or yellow. Purists can choose to enable blur and slowdown to closer match the experience of playing these games on an actual Game Gear. This is also the first Virtual Console emulator to allow for custom controls. (You'll never need to use the 3DS' terrible start button!)
If the Game Boy emulator had this much work put into it, maybe we'd be able to use Game Boy Color palettes for monochrome games.
