Title: Amnesia: The Dark Descent.
Posted: January 06, 2011 (10:21 PM)
So I guess the people who made this expected me to play the entire game upside-down.

I'm gonna go play something that isn't shit.

In that case, don't play Castlevania: Lords Of Shadow.

Have you finally found a game to which you will not award a perfect score?

I was still going to give it a 10 just to irritate you, but I hated it.

Sadly, I'll probably still pick C:LoS up.

...when it's in the bargain bin.

While playing Enslaved, there were a couple times when I had to shake my head and think about how it wasn't the 10/10 experience True promised.

Upside down? I don't get it.

Basically, the game employs Eternal Darkness-style sanity effects for atmosphere, and one of them is to invert the game world so that the player's perspective is upside-down. Sometimes it's just a split-second effect used to discombobulate players (which works extremely well), but in the fifteen minutes I've played Amnesia so far, twice the game has inverted my perspective and refused to go back to normal until I've completed the section.

Obviously I haven't spent much time with the game, but I'm already prepared to call it quits. Atmosphere is one thing, but this is just stupid and unintuitive. The game actually begins with a set of title cards from the developers encouraging you to immerse yourself in the experience, yet this inverted-perspective thing is constantly pulling me out.

Hmm.. I see what you mean. It only happened to me a handful of times during my play through but I agree it does break the flow quite swiftly.

Honestly though I still really enjoyed the game as a whole. The story and gameplay in conjunction with the atmosphere was enough for me to want to see it through.

Ha, I'm the opposite. I liked Amnesia but thought Eternal Darkness was shit. Then again I only played the latter it for 4-5 hours or so.

If it's any help, Eternal Darkness is known for getting off to an incredibly slow start, but hey, don't force it.

Ninjamohawk: So are you telling me that these inverted sequences aren't scripted? Am I just not beating the game quickly enough or something? I want to give Amnesia a fair chance since it seems cool, but this one unfortunate flaw renders it unplayable as far as I'm concerned.

Eternal Darkness occupies a strange space in game-time. I think it is a game that has become more appreciable with age, because it's stayed shockingly unique in its genre. But I always had some major problems with it, such as a lackaluster story, unbelievable reuse of stages, and a sanity system which shoots itself in the foot by being easily bypassed. Originality counts for a lot, I guess it just depends on exactly how much it counts in your book.

Best use of a bath tub in a video game, though!

Suskie: I'm not sure if they are or not. I only played through it once and all the crazy stuff that happens to you when you're in the dark too long or are being chased kinda bleeds together in my mind at this point.
