StarCraft II's multiplayer is brutal.

Here's my most embarrassing loss yet. It was a 1v1 match and both of us were Terran. The very first thing the guy did was build a Barracks, fly it over to my base, and land it just outside of my field of view. While I was still setting up (building SCVs, getting resource collection underway, setting up some Supply Depots, etc.), this guy was training a platoon of Marines right next to me. Wiped me out before I had the chance to build a single attacking unit, and I had to rely on my SCVs to rally up for one pathetic last stand before the match was over.

Freakin' StarCraft II, man. Some of these people are just insane.

Friggin APM bullshit...

I love how a lot of these "top players" brag about having 200-300 APM, when the majority of that is them tapping a dead key on their keyboard. I checked my average APM with an app once. It was around 80, because most of the game was spent not frantically clicking.

That doesn't look fun at all.

I never got heavily into Starcraft's multi-player scene. I enjoy the puzzle aspect of single player, where you have to replay a mission until you've figured out the perfect way to approach it. The inclusion of Brutal mode on Star Craft II rewards this kind of playing.

Multi-player, on the other hand, I've often lost without knowing why I lost.

I hear that SC2 lets you review the matches, though, so maybe I could start trying that out.

I guess I just don't have much interest in the multi-player at this point in time.

There is something close to a set strategy for the openings of every match. This means the first 5 minutes or so is basically identical with every somewhat competitive player. If you lose super quickly chances are you aren't keeping up with your opponent. That comes with practice. Try using tons of hotkeys and practice switching between them quickly. Pro players hardly ever use the mouse. I'm not very good but when I play most strategy games I'm probably 75% keyboard.

Also the best way to improve is to watch your demos and demos of players realistically better than you. By "realistically" not someone who is capable of 400 apm that you will never be able to keep up with. Maybe players a bit better than you but not in another league all together. The best part about SC is it is so widely played that finding demos/strategies is super easy.
