Splinter Cell: Conviction.
April 12, 2010

Does anyone else think this looks absolutely fantastic? I just watched IGN's video review and I'm dead set on picking this up at some point this week. I hadn't really been keeping up with this game and I'm surprised they've made so many changes to the traditional mechanics of the series, but it seems they've implemented a faster and more action-packed pace without sacrificing stealth play. Plus, it's apparently got the best cover system ever.

One question, though: I never played Double Agent. Heard mixed things about it. Still worth playing?

Double Agent is pretty meh, I enjoyed Chaos Theory more.

Conviction does look fantastic. But it had bloody better given how long it's been in development.

I thought "Double Agent" was very good, but not as tight as "Chaos Theory". People say the Xbox version is actually superior to the 360 one, but I haven't tried it.

I've never been a big Splinter Cell fan but Conviction looks like another dope game not on the PS3.

I only played the first Splinter Cell. Should I bother with the others?

I'd rank them:

Chaos Theory > Double Agent Xbox > Pandora Tomorrow > Double Agent 360 > Splinter Cell

Chaos Theory was easily my favorite. All of the series' previous flaws were non-existent, it was more fast-paced, varied, etc. The perfect stealth game and one of my favorite games of all time. Pandora Tomorrow is not as refined but had some parts that were up to par with Chaos Theory. The original was one of my favorite games when it came out, but its flaws really show today. If you want to play them all I still suggest playing it, but it's not a must-have and skippable.

As for the Double Agents: they were both fun but the Xbox version was superior. It stayed closer to the series' roots which DA was a bit different, and I'm not sure if it's for the best. Plus the 360 version really didn't feel next-gen.

I wasn't really impressed at Conviction's demo but can't really say why. Maybe it's just that I'm getting tired of single player games in general and it's beginning to show. Since it's only 5 hours long I'll probably wait for a drop in price.

I rented the 360 version today and it's not really impressing me so far. The undercover stuff is initially cool for being different but otherwise kinda boring, and it feels like the whole game is much more finnicky than the previous games, i.e. the AI is ridiculously alert and overly sensitive to everything you do. Level design doesn't feel as tight either.

I watched someone play it on a live stream last night, and I wasn't that thrilled about it. I've only played the first Splinter Cell, and while I think the stealth and difficulty was way too much at times, I didn't want it dumbed down this much. I saw Sam walk right in front of two guards, and they still didn't notice him. Then I saw guards continue to walk through the door that the other guards were being killed at without a problem.

Also, the enemies curse too much. x_X
