Does anyone here know anything about noun phrases?

In the following sentence, have I correctly identified the noun phrases (the phrases between brackets)?

About half-way between (West Egg) and (New York), (the motor road) hastily joins (the railroad) and runs beside (it) for (a quarter of a mile, so as to shrink away from a certain desolate area of land).

Actually, I think there should be a bracket after mile and before "a certain".

I think you got it right, althought I don't think 'it' needs a bracket. I could be very, very wrong though.

Yeah, you're right. I shouldn't really class a pronoun as a noun phrase.

The more I think about it, the more I think this is right:

About half-way between (West Egg) and (New York), (the motor road) hastily joins (the railroad) and runs beside it for (a quarter of a mile), so as to shrink away from (a certain desolate area of land).

Because the "so as to" prepositional clause doesn't seem to modify "a quarter of a mile" and can be moved about the sentence on its own. I think.

Despite having a thriving inner grammar police, I forget the terminology.

I remember I liked The Great Gatsby, though. Even in high school.

Yeah, knowing something is right and saying why it is right are two different things when it comes to grammar, unfortunately. I should have picked something easier to analyse, like The Hungry Caterpillar...

I suck at nouns, verbs, and all that jazz. I usually just look at a sentence and I can tell if it's good or not, but I'd be unable to tell you why. I didn't pay that much attention in English in the early years.
