4.3.2010 : Modern Wuhfare.
April 03, 2010

It was time for a break from ResoFat today. I spent way too much time indulging in level grinding and hex-piece grinding for my own good and got burnt out. Only a little, though - not forEVER.

I ended up finishing Chapter 7, and saved after the introduction to 8. All told, that intro made me want to keep playing to see what happened next! It figures.

Instead, I popped in Modern Warfare 2 to see what all the fuss was about. I know, I know; I'm behind.

Played for around 3, 3 and a half hours. Honestly, I'm not sure what all of the awards were for. This thing definitely isn't my style and moreover, it makes me wonder about the state of mainstream gaming coverage.

I'm aware that the community hype is over the multi-player, which I didn't try; but all of the critical acclaim was aimed at its campaign. Welcome to Medal of Honor, Infinity Ward - they only beat you to the punch by 2 console generations.

I've never played through so much scripted, trial and error, AI-devoid shit in my life - besides the late 90's. There's a time and a place for everything: the time and the place for bullshit was. . . the late 90's.

Obviously, I can go back and play through any of the first few MoH games and get some enjoyment out of it, if only for the fact that there's the nostalgic tingling sensation. I'm remembering a game that was once current and relevant, now fallen into the ass crack of time and technological advancement. I can relive the glory and at the same time, take fun in the fact that it's now extremely outdated.

All MW2 makes me want to do, is gather Infinity Ward in a totem circle and Fatality them with used Tampax.

You're aware that Infinity Ward was founded by and comprised by the people responsible for the Medal of Honor games, right? There are going to be some similarities for that reason.

Anyway, there wasn't any trial-and-error gameplay in Modern Warfare 2 that I can recall. Are you thinking of anything in particular?

I remember lots of trial-and-error gameplay in MW2. Going through the school, for example. Do it this way -- die. Try doing it that way again -- die. Since repeating the same thing and expecting a different result is insane, try it a different way -- die a bit differently. Try it a third way... voila! Success.

Portions of the game (not all of it) were designed less to be FPS reflex tests, and more about stopping/proceeding at the right moments so that the script would advance in a favorable way. That's not a terrible thing in and of itself, but sometimes the disjoint between "doing it this way is IMPOSSIBLE" and "doing it this other way is EASY" was too much.

You're for real, Jason?
I had no idea; that does explain a lot!
Well. Damn.

Yeah, Zig; the school was definitely the first thing that came to mind. Then the whole section - what was it called - "Takedown"? Where you're following that guy's assistant through the Favella.

For some reason, the game gave me a ridiculous checkpoint there. Not cool.
Besides that, when you die in 3 hits, and the enemies start shooting you before your reticule even comes around the corner: OUCH.
