3.3.2010 : Starting the day with some thoughts on ResoFat
March 31, 2010

It's early/late, and I feel like typing out my thoughts thus far on Resonance of Fate/End of Eternity.

(I like the slashies)

I've piled 32 hours - give or take - onto this sum'bitch, and it's been a hell of an experience. I'm on chapter seven if I remember right, and my characters are hitting the level 44 mark. For those who wonder.

Coffee is soooo good.

First! Grinding in a typical JRPG is never "fun". At best, it lacks the certain properties that make it as annoying and monotonous as others, but it's never something that you could call "fun". Granted, that doesn't mean people don't like it. I, for one, love to level GRIND! Even though, it's still admittedly mind-numbing.

I can say then, that ResoFat is not what I'd consider a typical JRPG in that regard. Here, I actually find grinding FUN! I do it because I want to. There's nothing like this game's battle system, I tell ya. It's so incredibly addictive.

There are elephants! With two legs!! With T-Rex arms!!! With rocket launchers strapped to their microscopic dongs!!!11!!ONE!!!

I had something relevant to write out, but I think that's long since gone to the shitter. I have a mad stomach ache and I can't gather the reason. Really can't. Other than french fries and coffee.

As fun as it is, I should work on getting finished with this bitch. I should move on to something else.

Lately, I've been doing pretty well with finishing games. Mass Effect 2. . . Mass Effect 2. . .

I want to get back to playing Dragon Age: Origins. I like having a PC that can do things. Wait! I need to play Gabriel Knight: SotF again, too! I haven't gone through that since I was like, twelve. Been a long-long time. Now I'ma go listen to some Elton John, and then was the homosexuality down with some Morrissey, then get knocked out with Danzig. Good times.

Resonance of Fate is definitely an interesting game. I'm not sure what I think of it just yet, but it's one that I'm glad I didn't miss. I'll review it eventually, but there's still a lot of time for me to figure out what I like and don't like about it. So far, all I can really say that I don't like is the very gray graphical style (I like the occasional blue sky and green blades of grass), while I would agree that the combat is very interesting... though rather difficult to really get a grip on at first.

This game looked fascinating and like it could be really fun, I just haven't had time to play it yet.

Well now that it's further into the morning, and I can actually gather my thoughts a little more (a little). . .

The graphical style is pretty 'meh', especially in battle. Musically, though, I really like what they've done. There's nothing I've really found that stands out enough to be incredibly catchy - as in, nothing that I'm humming to myself - but at the same time, it's pretty sonically diverse. The depressing Jazz sound of the towns the lower you go on the tower is great =]

Oh yeah! The battle system took me a HUGE amount of time to completely pick up on, and completely may be the wrong word; I'm still figuring things out. Juggling and Smackdowns are satisfying as hell, though. So is Leanne. Huh-huh. Wink-wink. Panties.

The one thing I can say for sure at this point, is that for some reason, ResoFat reminds me of the original Shadow Hearts. It's kind of ghetto. It's kind of bland. Yet there's something charming about it. I think it's Leanne.

It may indeed be Leanne. She's quite the fox. I've been taking screenshots with my capture card as I play through the game and I took a bunch of battle. I got a panty shot of her that didn't have motion blur or anything--totally by accident--and I'm proud of myself because I did the mature thing and deleted it.

Your comparison to the first Shadow Hearts feels right to me, by the way. There's a certain vibe that both games have going, but in spite of that they don't play an awful lot like one another. It's really quite odd.
