Then it adds in a bunch of other interesting and likeable characters (also some not-so-likeable), gives you some solid information about them, and then, takes the player on an absolute rollercoaster ride between plotlines, brainwashing you several times, messing with your mind, betraying your trust, and ultimately, leading you to an epic and ingenious climax.

Like the Materia system, you lose spells when you change Junctions and magic around. And I tend to forget who has what spell, so I go to have Rinoa cast Aura, and find out that not only did I give all of her Aura to Quistis, but Quistis isn't in my party. AAAAAAACK!

FFVIII is just all around average. Not Square’s (now Square Enix) best showing.

The ocean looks calm, as the tide moves inward. Suddenly, the tranquil beach scene transforms into a flower field, as a lonely girl in a blue cape walks across. She holds a golden feather in her hand, which floats up into the sky. Then, a brown-haired young man in a black jacket grips his gunblade by the hilt. Enter Squall Leonhart, a lone wolf at a military school known as ''Garden''. He goes through life routinely, ignoring almost everyone and having numerous struggles with his rival Seifer Al...

Yet often too fantastical to believe, the game seems eerily aware of its own incredibility.

The music is uninteresting for the most part (with the slight exception of a few good songs), and the graphics leave much to be desired. It can be fun at times, but most of the time the game seems like a chore.

Final Fantasy VIII is a game you'll love and hate. Where you may love the sci-fi premise, you may baulk at the love story. Where you may hate drawing magic from your enemies, you'll love the customisation of the Junction system. Where you may love the realistic character designs, you may not like the hero, Squall. Where you may love the abilities you can teach your Guardian Forces, you may not like summoning them. Where you may love Final Fantasy VIII, you may hate it.

As the sun sets and dusk approaches, the two tribes draw near. They're shouting, brandishing weapons, and waving silk banners of all kinds of colours. As they get closer the din rises, and insults that would strip paint off a wall are hurled backwards and forwards. Blood is going to be spilt.

Final Fantasy VIII is a gorgeous work of art. It has a damn good story, too. But, to my chagrin, I have to say that Final Fantasy VIII is a pretty shoddy game — one that betrayed the magnificence of the previous two games in the series and, in my eyes, brought Square’s monolithic series plummeting from its perch on top of the role-playing world.

I was expecting alot from Final Fantasy VIII when I purchased it earlier this year. Sure, FF8 was hated by many, and had recieved it's fair number of subpar reviews, but I had yet to experience a bad Final Fantasy game, and I did not think this would be the exception. As soon as I put in the game, I became very confused. The junction system boggled my mind, but I will get into that later on in the review. Basically, I could see why people disliked the game. It did not have the greatest feel at f...

Final Fantasy VIII is a game that has sparked a large amount of controversy. From those that consider it the sparkling pinnacle of the established series, to those that loathe it intently, it is clear that a game of this ilk must have some strong characteristics at the heart of it.

For all the effort Square put into making Final Fantasy VIII’s plot interesting, it failed to trigger the emotional fireworks within me for one simple reason: I didn’t care.

There's just something about the words 'Final Fantasy'. Those two words, when placed together, seem to send gamers everywhere into a rather exited state. In fact, it would be no overstatement to say that the Final Fantasy series of RPG games may well be one of the most revered in all of gamedom, right up there with Mario, Sonic and Zelda. So the pressure is very much on every time that Square choose to release a game in the series. And Final Fantasy VIII was perhaps under even more intense scrut...
